Photos saved in an extension that windows won't open

Hi, I hope I am in the right place to get help with my problem. I backed up a bunch of photos onto an external hard drive yesterday (which I do on a regular basis), but today when I tried to access those files I couldn't. For some reason, the file extensions are different and none of my programs will open them. A few saved as perf and the rest saved as xml files. What happened? I didn't think I did anything different than I always do when I backup. Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

Were you able to open them before? Can you remember the extension they had before, cause sometimes, just changing the extension, and poof, photo works.

IE Very Slow to Open htm Files Previously Saved
After saving a web page previously opened in IE, IE then takes more than a minute or two to open that file. This occurs on a Dell desktop and an HP notebook, both of which are running Win 7 Pro, 64 bit and IE 11, 32 bit, and updated with the same important Windows updates. Any thoughts, or am I...
