Java, flash player have nothing to do with this I believe. I know on fresh clean just windows 7 and updates (nothing else installed) windows media player 12 could find album information no problem.

Also since people are all suddenly reporting the issue now, it has to be something on the server side.

To reproduce, go to an album in WMP and right click, find album information.
To clear things up, this is the screenshot of the issue people are getting within windows media player 12:

Java is different from java script. I said java above not java script. I edited the above to add the fact how to reproduce the problem.

And a clean vm has the same issue. So defiantly microsoft end.

@ Sampid71: I have no FLAC plug-ins, so I would say that isn't the issue.

Here are some inconvenient but effective work-arounds I have found.

A) I am using an obsolete version of Winamp to batch-modify the meta data. With it, I can manually alter the information of one album at a time. I would really prefer to have WMP do it automatically.

B) I am using Monkeymedia to batch rename files, one album at a time.

I am actually one of the 0.000001% of the population that really did buy a 120GB Zune. I loved the unit (except for the battery life). It was one of the biggest on the market and played a larger variety of audio formats than iPods or Walkmans. My apologies to the folks above that suggest using the Zune software, but I find the Zune program to be one of the worst I've ever encountered.

I'm not getting that error so mine is a bit different probably means nothing though.

You really should of remove the java and flash pointer because I never said anything about either
My error clearly says URL .........Default.js

Someone mentioned it before in the thread, but its not there now.

It is weird that your error message is different.

I don't have allot of crap installed including Java from Oracle
But either way wmp would use ie to access this site and out of date java applets are blocked now even if the resource had been removed the applet remains,

So if there is a machine where this actually worked without error comparing the url....js would be an interesting task

I haven't had WMP on my system for a while ...

I went directly to the URL
http://fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com/
and received the error
Windows Media Player 12: 500 Internal Server Error-x.png
That doesn't really pinpoint anything, other than my machine doesn't have the credentials or the URL requires that credentials are supplied in the call (through WMP).

Anyway, isn't there an alternate metadata server offered in the dropdown list of WMP? Like I said, it's been a while since I had WMP.

AllMusic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All Media Network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
List of online music databases - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

AllMusic | Music Search, Recommendations, Videos and Reviews
All Media Network, LLC

I think there is a rebuild Library option - but be careful !!!

The metadata store is located in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player (I think) - you might want to copy the folder to a safe place before mucking around too much with WMP libraries - but the references might be GUI, so a copy won't buy you much without backing up the registry keys associated with the metadata.

Media information in Windows Media Player: frequently asked questions

How do I tell the Player to automatically fix the media information in my files?

The Player can automatically scan the files in your library and download missing media information or attempt to fix incorrect media information. To change this setting, do the following:
  1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Media Player.

If the Player is currently open and you’re in Now Playing mode, click the Switch to Library button Picture of the Switch to Library button in the upper-right corner of the Player.

  2. Click Organize, click Options, and then click the Library tab.

  3. In the Automatic media information updates for files area, select the Retrieve additional information from the Internet check box.

  4. Do one of the following:
    • If you want the Player to only add media information that is missing from your files, click Only add missing information.

    • If you want the Player to overwrite all the media information in your files, click Overwrite all media information.
Use caution with this option. If you manually modify media information in your files, this option will potentially overwrite all of your changes
.
If it solely a Server issue (500 server error seems to point there) nothing will help until the Server or reference to the server is fixed.
