Stopped saving vid clips from VLC viewer and Alshow

I have Alshow and VLC viewer. Until a couple days ago if I was viewing a vid clip in either one I could push the appropriate keys and save a part of the video to a given folder.
Now, it goes through all the steps as if it's saving that part of the vid but they are not in the folder and can't be found on the puter.

When you start the player, rightclick the shortcut (or exe file) and choose run as administrator. Many parts of the computer are 'locked down' by the OS but often using administrative rights will allow the write access.

Different videos clips and movies of different formats. The thing is, both programs worked before with no problems. They will capture pictures from the videos, as they did before, but will not capture part of a video like they did before. The programs seem to be going through the process but are not, it seems, converting the capture from a temp(?) file to the output file format of the program and placing the result in the capture folder of the program being used or anywhere else. I say the last part because I did find a file with the .tmp extension in the alshow capture folder. This was found after a "rare" crash n reboot into safe mode. Of-course they were not there after a normal boot.
