Unable to scan photos into picture files

I use a Hewlett Packard Model C5180 Printer/Scanner/Copier that is two years old. Since upgrading to Win 7 the "scan to file" feature no longer shows in the scan menu. Nor does the "Import from Scanner" feature work in Windows Live Photo Gallery. When I tried the latter, the computer froze and I had to do a restart.

Anyone have ideas on how to resolve this?

    Thanks for any assistance.

Click on 'Devices and Printers, right click on the printer/scanner, choose 'start scan'. When it's done scanning, tag it and preview. It should end up in Pictures library. You can right click on it and "Open With" ... select the program you want to use.

I assume you installed the appropriate W7 Scanner software installed.

    HP says ...
    1. Click on windows icon or start.
    2. Click on search and type ‘scan’.
    3. Find ‘scan a document or pictures’ in the above pane.
    4. Click on ‘scan a document or pictures’.
    5. New window will open try to scan from that windows.

Their site also has These suggestions.

There's even a Better/Easier way if you have Irfanview installed

Thank you Jaycee, that method does work. However, it is too cumbersome to use in my current project of scanning my 35mm pics into the picture file. I have a ton of photos to scan and need the quickest method I can find.

Do you know of any way to get the HP printer to scan the way it should?

    Appreciate your input.

Thank you, noyb. I didn't know there was new software available for the scanner. My next step is to download the new software and see what happens. I'll report back after the download, which will probably be tomorrow.

I really appreciate the assistance from you and Jaycee.

Another dilemna: I downloaded the new HP software for the C5180 (previously I incorrectly said it was a C5100). The download went well and all seemed ok until I tried a few test scans.

Can't find the scanned items anywhere. They are supposed to go to the "My Scan" file in the Picture Library, however, I'm still not locating them, even after doing a complete computer scan.

Anyone know of a fix for this?

    Thanks for any advice.

That's one reason why I use Irfanview to perform my scans.

It opens the scan in Irfanvew where I can edit it, if needed ..
Then tell it where to save the file.

Standby .. I'm waiting on my W7 computer to boot ...
I want to see how it handles my C5280

    - I tried Windows Fax n Scan and it works fine. The problem with it is lack of speed. I have a multitude of 35mm images to scan into my photo library which necessitates all the speed I can get.

    - Also looked in the Documents folder/My Scans. Folder is empty.

Something I did notice, though. During the HP scan, it indicates that the scan will be sent to c:\Users\jameswhe\Pictures\My Scans. My picture library is set up under James instead of jameswhe. Wonder if this is causing the problem....

Thanks again for your input, noyb.

    I've never scanned Slides ???
Is this scanning just the 35mm size ?? .. or over scanning ??
I'd assume it should be scanning at 600dpi (or greater) .. and that might slow it down.
