I don't use album gain because my mp3 collection is 100% individual songs. I have no "albums". My listening is 99.9% "random play". I never sit down and listen to one artist for a half hour.

My understanding of album gain is that it samples an entire album and sets the level in accordance with the peaks found across all songs on the album. Which would mean that album gain is useful IF you want to listen to that album in its entirety AND IF you are satisfied with the way the original album was engineered.

If I understand album gain correctly, if all songs on an album were joined into a single song, then track gain and album gain would effectively be identical.

But I wouldn't let my opinion stand in the way of your own experimentation. Do what works for you.

Take some time to examine the wave forms of songs that irritate you. I'd imagine many of them have flat tops and few significant valleys.
