    Hello Herm,

You might see if the free program Recuva may be able to recover them for you. :)

Thanks! Thanks to you I recovered the missing files but insteadof a thumbnail like they used to be the files are in some strange format as shown in my screen shot. Can you help me get thumbnails again?

When you open the file, does it show the image as usual?

It looks like you have thumbnail previews turned on since one of the images is showing.

External HDD backup files of unknown origin?

If you like, download and merge the .reg file for the .jpg option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It will restore the default associations and registry entries for .jpg files. :)

    Hi,
Also use this symbol for the preview pane to see if the image appears in it,
You can also use the symbol to the left of it to switch to Medium or even extra large icons and see if that makes a difference ?
The yellow folders are weird showing for each image for sure :/
It's almost indicating more files are inside each thumbnail listing ?

Recuva has a thumbnail view but I can't figure out how to use it. the following is from Recuva documentation:

TheThumbnails View shows you a list of files and small previews of images Recuvacan recover. You'll note that Recuva does not show previews for certain images- those are ones Recuva likely cannot recover.
