Disks faulty after burning with DVD maker

Have burnt successfully in the past but recently discs are not playing properly.
This has happened twice now using DVD+R discs.
I gave up on the first but I just tried the latest again on DVD-RW and it seems OK.
Would I be better with DVD-R discs and, if so, why would this be?

Acer Aspire 7540 with TSSTcorp TS-L633B drive.
