works great (win 7/8/10) got it to open and animate gif files. and i got it to open other picture files to. it is a lot faster and better then the default (and a lot of other picture viewers)
    if anyone want instructions VVVV
    set C:\Windows\gif\rundll32 compatibility to vista

    open regedit and go to

    HKEY_currrent_user\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\\Software\Microsoft\W indows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\

and in the picture file extension folder
    file extension\OpenWithProgids

add a binary file (REG_BINARY) with the name

    GIFImage.Document

(now you can associate that file typ with windows photo and fax viewer)

right click the picture and go to settings and change the open with to windows picture and fax viewer

    done

    Hello Grimlock,

GIF files will only play in Internet Explorer, but you can set Windows Photo Viewer to only view them as a still image.

I found that you will need to right click on the GIF file and use Open With to select Windows Photo Viewer as the default program instead.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn
Is this issue unsolved? I can't find the link to download this anywhere in the thread, the google docs link was taken down as well. Is there a better solution to restore animate gif functionality to Windows Photo Viewer available out there?

Hello Maximellion, and welcome to Seven Forums.

"Windows Photo Viewer" is an app included in Windows 7. You should be able to right click on the .gif file, click on "Open with", and click on "Windows Photo Viewer.
