media center extender configuration error system cannot find path

New install win 7 pro on 64x machine.
Could not get media center extender (xbox 360) configuration to complete.
It would find the extender but then hang for a time configuring the extender. Finally an error message would appear, "media center extender configuration error".
Going to services.msc for more information found only this "Event 301" and "system cannot find path specified."
Spent days and days searching the forums and trying the suggestions. Nothing worked until I found a very old MS tech note: Event ID 301 — Windows Media Center Extender Software The error code (80070002) mentioned under the event didn't seem to match the services detail, but I followed these steps:
Error Code 80070002
This error code indicates a file required for setup was not found on the Windows Media Center PC. You should check for the presence of the file.
To check for the presence of the file:
  1. On the Windows Media Center PC, click Start, and then click Computer.
  2. Locate the %WINDIR%/ehome/MCX/x02/ folder.
  3. Check for the XboxMCX-V.xex file
The /MCX/x02 folder did not exist.
Created the MCX folder and the x02 subfolder.
Did a C:/ drive search for the XboxMCX-V.xex file. Found it at some obscure place. Copied it to the newly created x02 folder.
Re-ran the extender configuration. Success!!!!
