VLC stopped working, reinstall does nothing

So I was about to watch a DVD tonight and my VLC didnt open automatically. I tried to open manually and still didnt work. Task Manager showed a process, so I ended the process and still no luck when trying to open, it just starts the process again and nothing but that happens.

I was using 1.0.3 RC but since this problem I have tried the 1.0.3 release and it still doesnt work.

I have done everything even a restore to when I know it was working (earlier today) and nothing still.

Only thing I installed, that I now have uninstalled is 3DMark Vantage. I dont know if this caused the problems but its the only thing I have installed in days.

    Any ideas?

Oh yea and whats even weirder is that I can open something in VLC and it does open but in something called "Direct3D Output" mode or something. No interface apart from the actual playback.

    EDIT:

I have now noticed that all media applications have stopped working and windows update crashes my system...

Sounds like it may be time to try a repair install.

    hi and welcome

first things first do you have a backup to retore from?
do you have the win 7 dvd?
Now lets try and figure out what wnet wrong. typw eventvwr insearch>go to the windows log>application tab. look for errors (they have red in teh left hand column) that relate to vlc, app crash, app hang, etc. there is a lot of dat so you may want to try and launch vlc even if it crashes so you can look at less date. When you find the error note the event ID andcourse code and tell us wha they are.

    Thanks

Solved it, it was because I happened to half knock out a SATA cable from one of my HDDs. I think the rest was just knock on affects from that.

Thanks for all the sudden help and ideas though, and sorry for the wild goose chase lol!
