Quicktime overrides my default m4a association with WMP

I'm running Win7 x64.

Prior to QuickTime being installed, .m4a files would open up in WMP when I'm using IE8, which is my preference. Also, outside of IE, for example in Windows Explorer, double-clicking on a .m4a file also opens up WMP, per my association default.

But as soon as I install QuickTime--even though the default for .m4a is still set to WMP--in IE8 the .m4a file is now opening up with QuickTime! :mad: Windows Explorer is still fine and it opens up the file with WMP, but only IE is using the wrong default program.

How can I change the default program association for .m4a audio files in IE?

Associate a File type or protocol for a program

Let it load the full data and look for your association you want to change.
Select it by highlighting it and click and select whatever program you want to run it.

That's it!

Also, look at the Preferences in QT as it may be set to be the default player for that file type and if you change it, per the instructions to associate a file type, the next time you use QT it can reset the association back to QT.

The associations are fine because, like I said, from Windows explorer, it is not a problem. From Windows Explorer, double-clicking on an .M4A file launches WMP correctly no problem.

QT doesn't have a separate file association preferences. That is, Edit | Preferences | Browse | File Types / MIME Types takes you to the Win 7 Set Associations, just like the IE8 Set Programs button does as well.

And in those associations, WMP is set as the default program. Again, this is not a problem from Windows Explorer. It's only from within IE8.

I'm sorry but I'm unable to comprehend what you are asking.
I thought you had a problem with IE8 not having the proper program to start when it sees an .m4a file on a webpage and you click on it.


I showed you the steps to change an association in IE8 above but it seems maybe your problem is not in IE8 but with QT.

Sorry I'm unable to where the issue is as per your statements.

Hey, thanks for trying...let me try to explain a little more simpler and clearer:

1) From within Windows File Explorer, if I double-click on a .M4A file (a file from my iTunes music library), it correctly launches WMP to play the song;

2) If, on the other hand, I am using IE8 and I click on an HTML hyperlink for a .M4A file, IE8 will open and play the song using the QT plugin;

3) If I completely uninstall QT and then try IE8 again, this time IE8 will open and play the file with WMP.

QT is doing something such that it is causing IE--and ONLY IE--to open and play .M4A files with QT (instead of the default WMP).

If I disable the QuickTime add-on then IE still tries to load the file via QT, but with the add-on disabled, I just get a blank page, that's all.

Hmm, I guess that did not do any good then. Typical Apple - they want to take over the world. Do you still have the WMP add-on in there and is it disabled. If yes, enable it.

No, unfortunately I am still stuck with the same problem.

Apple is at fault here! :mad: The only solution is to uninstall QT but, unfortunately again, it is needed for iTunes.

Quicktime is well known for trying to take over the world.

Get rid of it and replace it with either Quicktime Alternative or Quicktime Lite.

Free-Codecs.com : QuickTime Alternative 3.1.0 : QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player.

Either works well with I-tunes and does what is necessary without trying to disrupt your file associations.

Uninstall quicktime before installing alternative or lite. You may even have to uninstall I-tunes, but probably not.

Make sure you use free Revo (Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download ) to uninstall it. Quicktime is a pain to uninstall and their uninstaller will leave a lot of stuff in your system that Revo can delte in the second pass. Make sure you set Revo to advanced (4th option) and select all/delete all in the second pass.

Have you tried right clicking the .M4A file, then choose 'open with'? It should default back to WMP, if you choose Media Player.

Hey, thanks for the tip about QTA and using Revo to uninstall!

I had heard about QTA but I just believed that Apple would make iTunes check specifically for QuickTime.

Anyway, great to hear that I can unistall it and that iTunes will work with QTA.

I will try it out and post my results.

Check out my original post...the problem is NOT from within Windows File Explorer...it only occurs from within IE, where the file appears as a link and the QT plugin takes over when it is clicked.

Yeah, good idea to use Revo before you try to install QTA.

I was able to install QTA after using only normal uninstall methods for Quicktime, but Quicktime is notorious for leaving stuff behind and being generally difficult to get out of your life, so Revo is a good idea. Use it to dig maximum depth into the registry for Quicktime remnants, but be sure to look carefully at the bolded registry keys it identifies. Make sure they all pertain to Quicktime.

Rebooting after each step might help too.

Look at your C Program files after you think you are rid of Quicktime and make sure you have no remaining folders for it.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I can't believe that the only solution though is to completely uninstall QuickTime. There must be a way to have QT installed for use with iTunes and still have another player as the default plug-in for the browser. There must be a setting that ties the MIME type for mpeg to a plug-in. I'm not talking about file associations, as mentioned multiple times in this thread, these settings affect files, but do not affect the plug-in used for streaming video from the internet. What I'm looking for would most likely be a registry setting. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I am now happy to report that QTA works great and now the .m4a files are being played with WMP!

iTunes runs fine with just QTA so everything is working as I wanted...and best of all I no longer have QuickTime! :)

That Revo Uninstaller is great!
