    Renaming files

I just upgraded to Windows 7 a few weeks back and I've decided to organize all of my digital photos of family, friends, vacations, etc (over 5,000 pictures). I'm somewhat OCD about being organized so I am looking for the easiest and quickest way to rename a ton of pictures. One thing I noticed about previous versions of Windows is if you do a batch rename, it renames the files like this and sort in this order. Note that I have skipped photos 4-9 and 11-99 for this example.

    Photo (1)
    Photo (2)
    Photo (3)
    Photo (10)
    Photo (100)

That would be great except some programs and sites like facebook sees the files in this order...

    Photo (1)
    Photo (10)
    Photo (100)
    Photo (2)
    Photo (3)

The only way that I am aware of bypassing this is to rename the files with three digit numbers (e.g. 001, 002, 003). Is there an easier way of doing this in Windows 7? I don't mind to download a program to do this, but I do want something that is just as easy as the way Windows does it except with the extra functionality of using three digit numbers.

    Hopefully this makes sense.

    Thanks!

The best application I have found for renaming files is Name It Your Way.

    Get it here:

Download Name It Your Way (NIYoW) 1.7.6 - Professional utility for massive renaming of files and folders - Softpedia

It has an auto-numbering capability. I don't know if it has specific 3 digit capability, but it is very flexible and you can likely get it done. I have never had it fail me, but I don't use the autonumbering function.

    It works like this:

You select a folder you want to work on.

You make a "rule" through a series of drop down choices and check boxes that will govern exactly how the files will be renamed.

You can preview the renaming to see if it does what you want.

    You can undo the renaming.

You can save the rule you used if you want or just make new rules each time you run the app.

You can operate on a group of files with several rules one after the other.

    For instance:

I just used it a couple of hours ago. I had a bunch of files that were named like this:

    01- Milord - Piaf, Edith.mp3
02- The Poor People Of Paris - Piaf, Edith.mp3

I used the application to rename about 300 such files to this format:

    Edith Piaf - Milord.mp3
Edith Piaf - The Poor People Of Paris.mp3

So, I deleted the leading numbers, renamed the singer first name last name, and put the song title after the singer. I used 1 rule for each task--a total of 3 rules. You may have to use more than one rule as well.

Try it. The learning curve is not steep and it is an excellent application.

Hello, I feel a little embarrassed. An acquaitance
asked me a question. Namely, he works for a REIT
company and he has to put together a project where
they must retrieve various documents from the
archives. By convention, the documents are stored
according to the name of the street the property is
on, not by the street address number, and prefixes
such as "North" or "South" are ignored in ordering the
    files.

I work around this inconvenience by creating "dummy" files. If you are renumbering, say 32 mp3 files or jpg files, just create 9 dummy files of the same format and name them so they will organize themselves in front of the real files you want to rename. Then, when you auto-number, windows will use up the (1), (2), etc on the dummy files and start numbering your good files at (10), (11), (12), etc. Then you go back and delete the dummy files and your good files will always be in the correct order.
