You must get it into a video container I think...

You need a properly built codecpack that will deal with the issues that are part of the Windows 7 lockdown on the system codecs. Get the Win7codecs. Uninstall anything you previously installed trying to get this to work. Installation of these codecs changes very little from default. Its up to the user what should be configured. Once you have it installed I suggest you open its settings application and make the following changes

suggested deviations from a default installation for x86 users,

    Help TAB, associate filetypes
SWAP TAB, Disable the DMO video codecs
SWAP TAB, choose ffdshow for xvid etc.
SWAP TAB, disable the Microsoft Audio decoder (unless you use LiveTV, then leave it alone)
H264 TAB, select the divx codec
    Audio TAB, match your hardware
Config TAB, lower boxes, match your hardware

With these settings you will be able to play almost any file.

The only exception is blu-ray rips. For those you need to disable Windows Media Foundation on the SWAP TAB and then choose the blu-ray splitter on the MPG TAB. If this is one of your needs, also select to use gabest from the MKV TAB because the blu-ray splitter disables Haali.
