I have a similar problem so I figured I'd tack on here.

I only have thumbnails for files generated by the codecs added by shark, ie mp4, mov, flv etc

I'm not using any other media players except windows

Basically all the windows files will not generate thumbnails.

I've tried deleting the icon cache, re-installing shark, deleting the windows media player library

    nothing has worked.

    so anything else?

    thumbnails are generated for pictures

*** fixed my prob, I used those registrys to default wmv, mov, mpeg, mpg and avi

Did you open the Shark codec program with admin rights, click "suggested settings", close, then re-open as regular user?
Well I am always using and Admin account and installed it when I was on the administrator account of course. But I installed it with Custom Settings but the only things I changed was the install path and I chose not to create a Start Menu shortcut.

I was talking about after installation. When you launched the program to change the settings, did you launch it as admin, use the "suggested settings" option at the bottom, close, and re-open as regular user to transfer the settings? If not, I'd recommend doing that.
