    cant burn dvd's only cd's

Hello all. i have recently done a clean install of Win 7 Pro 32 from vista on my Asus M51VA laptop.
i have searched numerous threads for what seems like an eternity without success. i contacted Asus Tech Support who advised to try a couple of things including upgrading my firm ware (Was and is Ver RR09) and MS K/base 975270. i have also done the MS K/base 314060 all to no avail.

The frustration is i can burn CD's but only from WMplayer. Nero doesn’t work for DVD's or CD's nor does explorer.
one other thing to note is when i select properties on this drive i dont get the "Tools" or "Recording" tabs

All was fine with Vista but now.........
i have included some sysinfo if that helps.

    Welcome!

Have you tried updating your burner drivers? Go into Device Manager, find your drive, right-click on it, and select Update driver software.

    Good luck!

Your problem is staring you in the face, YOU HAVE A CD-ROM DRIVE not a burner, you can play cd's only. DVD media will not read or write in a cd-rom drive.

Hi JK one of the first tjings i did was to update the drivers , but when i say that it was only a windows upate that i could find and ever time i do it now i get the " dont require updateing ...latest drivers "blah blah"

1Bowtie as far as "only being a CD drive" this is exactly the problem............... until i loaded Win 7 it was a DVD burner as well and performed as expected with Vista.

It can't magicly change from one os to another, the decription you gave in the quote i posted says it's a cd-rom, that's a fact.

Is it possible it has been changed, as 1. google search for specs shows the model has a DVD-RW, and 2. There aren't many laptops these days that don't come with that as the minimum capability. A firmware upgrade is needed perhaps?

My mistake, after googleing it is a burner. Apparently there are many people haveing prob's with this particular model. There were alot of different fixes from different people none however fixed everything. Try the right driver and clear the upper and lower filters and see if that works.

What do you see if you check your ''Autoplay'' settings .. type autoplay in the search bar and press return.

You should see some settings for Blank media .. cd's , dvd's
