    Product FRED said:
You can install the Vista one for 7. I'm using it now. The XP one (2.1) and Vista one (2.6) are nearly identical and both run on 7 just fine. That much I can attest to. Live Movie Maker lacks a lot of effects, the ability to fine-trim, add a lot of transitions, and export into various formats other than WMV. Once I downloaded it, I immediately began searching for the older versions.
Well, I see a lot of built-in transitions, animations and effects in Windows Live Movie Maker. It also allows to publish video directly to Youtube and Facebook. So, I find it much better.

I guess it's a matter of personal preference then. I fail to see how direct upload to Youtube or Facebook (which you can do yourself) is worth taking away of other essential features.

Windows Movie Maker 6.0 - Install on Windows 7

And I agree - I cannot deal with WLM either. But 2.6 is not all that swift either.

    The old version disappeared! :(

My computer crashed and have been searching EVERYWHERE for the old version of Windows Movie Maker. It doesn't make sense that they "upgrade" something, yet take all the good stuff away you know? lol I tried the Microsoft download page and it doesn't exist there anymore! I NEED this program or something STRIKINGLY similar. Windows LIVE sucks and Windows 2.6 sucks! Help me please! Anyone?

Also... I've already tried AVS Video Editor, Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, and Camtasia Studio 7! No comparison to the old version of windows movie maker .

My computer crashed and lost everything lol. apparently there's no simple way to retrieve the good windows movie maker waaaaa lol Is there anything even remotely similar? Everything else I've looked at is either too simple or missing important effects that I need. HELP!!!!

If you can find a Vista installation disk, you could extract it from there and then go with the tutorial.

I always thought that the output quality of WMM was pretty poor. That is a lot better with WLMM which is really the same as the WMM except it has no timeline. What are the effects you cannot reproduce in WLMM.

I'll have to check that out thank you :). I don't NEED AWESOME quality. However, I do NEED a timeline and the ability to split and zoom and pan etc... There are some titles and special effects that I like a lot in WLMM, but having what I like and having what I NEED are two totally different things lol. I have to prioritize lol. Why can't Microsoft just COMBINE the two eh?! lol

You are right. There were a lot of complaints when they came out with the WLMM. The lack of the timeline was a major complaint.

Just a tip regarding zooming. With Format Factory you can crop videos. That is handy if e.g. you want to bring in far away details like animals in the wild. If you need more details, let me know.
