It does stop once it finishes adding everything - it doesn't restart each time you run WMP for me. It's actually quite quick compared to iTunes, which my flat mate is presently leaving running overnight to add his music collection to.

Its ok with thr retrieve info from th enet option off

After posting the message below, I hardwired my media center extender and left my desktop on- it stopped after a couple of hours. I still have internet info off but the problem just seems on startup. Just an issue of having a large music collection for me I imagine.

"I have close to 500gb of music on a USB connected 1TB external HDD. The "Updating Library" has now run more than a couple of days. I believe all the songs are indexed. I turned off the "get media information from the internet" option. This issue seems to even freeze my media center extender (XBOX 360) and is extremely frustraing (I want my music on my TV BADDDD). What are potential workarounds? If I tell my WMP to stop adding files from the folder my music is in, will that delete all the music already indexed or just any additional music I don't manually tell Wmp to add? PLEASE help! "

I have the eternal updating problem too. And like others here I have all my music on an external drive (in my case firewired).
It really does sound like it is intended - but that doesn't make it any less stoopid.
I'm dropping a line to microsoft - maybe others should too.
Pity - best WMP I've seen and with the burning , syncing and good integration I'd like to use it.
Back to WinAmp or maybe AIMP if it works.

I am also liking WMP12 and I hope they can sort out these problems and maybe speed up this rather slow and possibly inefficient initial process.

Well, i cleared all folders from picture library and wmp12 seems working fine. It doesn't update library for all the time anymore.
So i suppose i've problems with the folder where all my pictures are stored. I've about 50gb of pictures, but i don't think that's the cause.
I've run checkdisk but everything is allright.
As soon as i add again my picture folder to picture library, wmp starts scanning forever, and does that at every startup.
So i've 2 options: not use picture library, or use it but have wmp costantly scanning.... good!!

Look in Services, find Media Center Extender .... click on Properties and set it to manual or disable it.

Mine was trying to update 'sports'

MC Extender Service was already disabled.
In the meanwhile i downgraded to WMP11 and i don't have the updating library annoyance anymore! With WMP11 you can choose what folder include in the library and you can avoid, for example, pictures folders.

Here is the tutorial, if you are interested in...

    Still An Issue?!?!

    Hey there,

I am having the issue that most are having in this thread. Let me break it down for those still unsure about what this thread is talking about. It seems that every time WMP is closed for a long enough period of time, it forgets it's library. It will not load the library file that it has on record, and thus builds a new library. This is extremely frustrating, as it is now Feb. 2010 and this is still an issue.

    Any thoughts?

I have a 328 GB music folder that still isn't finished updating in WMP after two weeks.
