Windows Media player 12 stuttering while playing DVDs

I have a problem since I bought my laptop. Whenever I play DVD movies on Windows Media Player 12, the video stutters and occasionally an error message pops out which says "Nvidia Windows kernel mode driver version 257.21 has stooped responding and has successfully recovered."

I have no such issues with VLC player or Windows Media player classic. Why is this so? My graphics and sound drivers are all up to date but this problem still persists.

I have also installed the K-lite full codec version but this did not solve the problem.

This is the specifications of my laptop:

P-7805g Notebook Gateway FX
Windows 7 Premium 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo processor P8700 2.53Ghz
4 GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS with 1 GB of DDR 3 discrete video memory.

Please help! Thanks!

This is a TDR problem, caused by a video driver or unstable GPU

Common issues that can cause a TDR:
- Bad memory
- Corrupt driver install
- Overheating
- Unstable overclocks (GPU or CPU)
- Faulty graphics card

Things to check first:

- Run memtest (memtest.org). This should complete with NO errors.
- Check temperatures. Its important you check these at load, which is generally when a TDR event will occur. Cleaning your system of dust can help temperatures significantly. Common sense will normally tell you if something is too hot, but if you aren't sure, the information is generally available online.

As you are having this error since you bought your laptop I suggest replacing it since the hardware might be faulty.

Well, I just found the meaning on the web:

TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) is a windows vista and windows 7 feature. Its purpose is to detect when the GPU stops responding, disable it and reinitialize it without the need to exit windows or reboot.

Well, I stopped getting those error messages while playing DVDs using Windows Media Player 12 now but the DVD movie does not play properly. It will go blank, I will return to the desktop and suddenly the movie will play again normally.

This occurs once in about 20 seconds. I installed the K-Lite codec but still face this issue. However, there are no issues if I choose VLC or Windows Media Classic.

Windows Media Player 12 is full of bugs! Is it a good idea to purchase the DVD codec from Microsoft to play DVD movies on Windows Media Player 12? Or is this a rip off to customers?
