H246 movie on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit - a very interesting problem?

Very recently I tried to play a H246 HD movie (shot on Canon EOS550D - .mov file) on my laptop. Spec's as follows:

i7, 6GB, 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics
running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
with Windows Media Player 12.0.7600.16415

The movie played but there was excessive horizontal coloured noise. I called the Canon help desk and they said to try the VLC media player - this worked OK. I was also advised to try Quicktime - I did, and this also worked.

I then tried the same file on a desk top running Windows Professional 32 bit - this worked. I tried it on my wife's laptop, running Windows 7 Standard 32 bit - it also worked. I attended a Canon Pro day today and was able to try the file on another laptop running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit - it worked!

They advised me to download the Shark 7 codex. I did - this did not resolve the problem.

So, I am left with at the moment the file playing OK on everything except Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I'd be real grateful if someone can shed some light on this?

Thanks.

Well, it probably has something to do with the H.264 codec that is installed on your machine. Although it could be a multitude of things. If you want to update the codec, you can try a few different codecs but you need to be careful when installing them because they can play havoc with your computer if you don't use them properly.

If you plan on experimenting with different files and codecs you'll need a few tools.

DXMan - A program which allows you to uninstall individual codecs.

AVIcodec - A program which allows you to view the codecs required to view a file.

The great thing about VLC Media Player is that it doesn't rely on the machine's codecs in order to play videos. It has it's own codecs built in. Another player that can play almost any video without third party codecs in Media Player Classic Homecinema. You should be able to find it on the website above, but if not, you can find it at...

Hi Shark007,

Thanks for the feedback. I had already tried this but to be on the safe side following your post I uninstalled, reinstalled and sorry to say but the problem is still there.

One interesting point to note is that on the Windows 7 Standard and Pro versions both 32 bit - I did not install any codex or do anything special - the movies played straight out of the box as it were.

I'd appreciate any further advice as this is a very frustrating problem!

Thanks.

William

I am not willing to troubleshoot your problem further, on this forum.
I have my own forums, taking the issue there, would be more sensible.

Very happy to take to your own forums - perhaps you'd be kind enough to let me know where? Thanks.
