"Windows Photo & Gif Viewer" would be most apt.
Windows as part of the name is also important, as it signifies that this is a re-working of the old Windows software, which is what people want, than simply using some random third party software.
Photo is a bit shorter than Picture, and MS seems to have dropped Picture in later versions (Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Photo Viewer (7/8), Photos (win8 modern app). And it also shows that it handles more filetypes than just gifs.
Gif being in the name is important because I'd wager the reason we all use this software is to enable the animating of gifs again, which MS took out after XP.
Eagerly awaiting news on if these two features can/will be implimented in the future. If they will be, then this program would be absolutely perfect for me.
I used to search my picture files by date. Once the search had finished and I had a window full of resulting thumbnails of pics from different folders, I would open the first one and it would display in Windows Picture and fax viewer. As I pushed the "next" arrow, it would go to the next pic in my search results as opposed to the next pic in the same folder as the original one.
I had my hopes up that this new program would do it, but I'm afraid it doesn't. Is there a simple tweak to make that happen?
Also, I flipped back and forth through this thread but couldn't figure it out: is there a way to use this without being asked for permission to use rundll32.exe every time? Its a bit of a pain.
^ What he said - that'd be awesome.
This works great but I got a bit of an issue with this.
Mainly its made windows convert every single .gif, .jpg, .png and others into ".tif" file extestions even though they are still .gjfs/jpgs/pngs/whatever and when setting to small icons its made all the picture icons into just file icons (the first 1 highlighted like so).
So how can I get this image viewer to not make windows edit the file type associations or give off that file icon?
It sure would be nice if Goofwear or corgano hadn't abandoned this thread.
I just looked into angelfire & found some negative comments so I won't go there.
Why don't you just upload them here?

This only half worked, it separated the .gif file extensions but didn't separate everything else.
Be honest I'm just looking for the original Windows (XP) Picture and Fax Viewer, that seemed to work best and there was a modified version that you guys created for Windows 7 sometime back, can I have that? also how can I uninstall this register file types script I just tried and the GIF viewerso I can just install the modified Picture and Fax Viewer clean?
Both my download links went bad, so I have now included the registry script as an attachment. I was hoping to avoid this since only registered users can download attachments, but I can't find a file host that is worth crap. Sorry for the inconvenience.
goku262002: These are the specific setup steps I took to get the GIF image viewer working:
- Download the Windows 7 Gif Viewer.exe installer from http://www.goofwear.com/windows/downloads/
- Install, and ignore the box that might pop up saying "this program didn't install properly"
- Right click on C:\rundll32.exe and change the compatibility mode to Windows Vista, and also check the box "run as administrator"
- Run register_file_types.reg
This registry script should associate bmp, jpg, png, and tiff files with the viewer. It worked on my Windows 7 x64 system. Make sure to run it with admin priveledges. You might have to "take ownership" of these registry keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\GIFImage.Document
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pngfile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TIFImage.Document
Note that the "GIF viewer" mentioned here is actually just a modified version of the original XP viewer, and should work exactly the same. The author simply changed the name, and I believe modified the code a little to make it work in Windows 7. I personally think he should have left the name alone to avoid confusion, because it will work with most other image types besides GIF.
I also attached the original unedited viewer dll from windows XP, but I don't know if it's possible to get it working. You could try pasting it over the shimgvw.dll that was created in C:\, but backup the original first!
