Windows 7 Compatibility with Windows Sever 2003

Just a quick question.
I am in the process of moving my computers to Windows 7 platform. I have 2
servers. Windows Server 2003 and our New Server Window 2008.

I would like to run both servers simultaneously until we are totally comfortable using
Windows 2008.

My issues is this, When I am connecting to Server 2008, windows 7 seems to work
fine in access our files. However, when I try to access Windows server 2003, I keep getting errors and no access to older server 2003.

Is there a compatibility issue with Server 2003 and Windows 7? if yes, what can be done to fix it updates? Second would it be better to just upgrade 2008.

If you could be a little more specific with what types of problems you're having that would help. Also what is the network setup (is it a domain with ad, or is it just a workgroup).

At the office where I work we have about 20 computers ranging from win98 to 7 Pro x64 all "hooked on" to a windows home server. I use the quotations because it's not a domain and there is no ad, but half of the computers are backed up nightly onto it, and all of them have the network shares mapped with no problem. Windows home server is basically server2k3 with a different gui and a some stuff turned off. It installs as server2k3. So initially I would say you're fine and should be able to get it to work. Also what versions of 7 are you running. I've had to make some changes to get 7 home premium working on the network.

hello here is break down. we are using a workgroup not domain. The problem we are having is that when
we try to access Server 2003 through a windows 7 client it prompts us to enter username and password.
Keep in mind the Passwords and usernames are exactly the same and have not been changed ( to the best of my knowledge). Even when we enter the information, it denies access to server.

To get older servers working with Windows 7 you will need to relax the security settings.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

You can also adjust these settings using the registry and the group policy editor. This page from Msoft explains what the different levels do and how to adjust them.
