    Detecting Users from remote Computers/Machines

    Hey guys

    I'm having trouble setting up my home network. What I'm trying to do is to add my remote PC' s User(myLaptop-Kevin) to the folder permission settings..

    Tidbits:

    1. myLaptop is detected in my Network. So I guess the physical connection is good. See picture.

    2. Also, the remote computer/user is Homegroup'ed to this computer.

    3. But when I try to share a folder or especially a Drive thru Right Click>Properties>Sharing>Advanced Sharing>Permission>Add.. the remote user is not detected..

    4. And when I try to type my remote computers name and user manually, it says 'Name Not Found'.

    5. I also cannot access mapped network drive from my remote laptop..

    The reason for this question is that I want to define the access of my files through my network.

    And also, I want to develop a visual basic application that can interface to the SQL Server 2008 Database installed on my Laptop..

    I hope somebody can help me on this problem.. Since you are my only hope and Ive been scouring the net for two days now..

    Thank You very much.

    If you right click on the file/folder/drive and go to Share With... you should be able to choose Homegroup from the list.

    Also: In order to use a homegroup, all PCs have to be using Windows 7. Otherwise you have to use a workgroup.

    You cannot set sharing permissions for anyone who does not have an account on the computer you are working on... that is at your desktop you can add \mydesktop\kevin but you cannot add \mylaptop\anyone.

    Also, please note that under Home Networking, unless you have "use usernames and passwords to access computers" enabled those permissions don't even get noticed since the HomeGroup is working off your homregroup password only.

    Finally... Unless both machines are on Win7 you're going to run into a bunch of problems with Home Networking.

    @NSGM

    Why is it that my context menu>Share With has only Advanced Sharing?

    @Common
    But now, how can I interface that SQL Server 2008 in this config?(It's a bit out of the blue, but that's my biggest problem!)

    Your context menu probably only has Advanced Sharing because you haven't set your Homegroup up properly.

    Is there any guide here so that I can set it up properly?

    Also, how can I use other computer services from other machines like sql server 2008?

    EDIT:
    Does the Home Network name of both my Desktop and Laptop be the same? Mine's name is "Home Network" on both sides..

    SQL Server 2008 administration over remote client is a whole different story to a file share. You can have SQL Server remote admin working without having any file shares. I never use Homegroup, so I can't help in that front, but I do know how to use normal sharing - just create "kevin" in your desktop, and have "kevin" in desktop the same password as "kevin" in laptop. I think that'll solve your problem.

    This is a totally different question than the one I thought I was answering.

    I'll let the others work with you on it....
