Windows 7: Computer won't recognize 5ghz router (computer has 5ghz), windows 7

My question is I have a computer with 2.4ghz as well as 5ghz, my router is a dual band 2.4 and 5ghz wireless n and no matter what I do my computer will not recognize the 5ghz network.

Background info: I have read through many forums and tried many different solutions none of which seem to work. My computer is 2 weeks old (hp). I have gone into device manager and clicked on the network card, properties, and advanced tab to discover my computer does support both 5ghz and 2.4ghz, as well both are enabled. My router is the wrt601n linksys dual band N wireless router. I have tried every setting possible with that router including : mixed, n only, a only, 20 or 40 all different widths and no matter what combination my computer will only pick up the 2.4ghz. Both drivers/software for my computer and router are up to date with the lastest. I have also tried close to and far away, distance and range are not issues either. It's becoming a major issue not having both bands working because we having gaming equiptment that when somebody is playing it kicks the other person off of the internet entirely! I am at a loss here on what to do please help!!!

Go into your cards'
'Computer management' > 'Device Manager' > right click on your wireless card > 'properties' menu > 'advanced'

Check that 2.4/5ghz is set up for your correct country band! (UK = 1-13)

To turn on Dual band wireless 'n'
My linksys 2.4/5 pci card has a menu item called "Multimedia Gaming environment" > 'enable'

This enables dual band - top speed @ 300!

I'm not sure why you can't get the 5GHz band to work for you, maybe neo's suggestion might help with that.

It might help your situation to know which channels your neighbors are using so you can find one that isn't being used. This software from Xirrus will show you all the channels being used in your area so you can pick the right one.

once on wireless 'N' dual band @300 ALL connecting computers have to be at that setting or they will not work!

ie you cannot connect with a wireless 'g' card - whereas you can connect with mixed wireless b/g/n @150 single band

This is the single band 'n' connection that allows 'B' & 'G' cards to work with 'N' cards on same wavelength.

Chev 65, I have been aware that sometimes neighbours may cause issues with interference that way but I am out in the country-rural area and can only pick up one neighbours wifi, Im sure the rest of the neghbours arent even sure what wifi is lol. Thank you however because that is one thing I forgot to mention that I had looked into. Neo, I never even thought to make sure about the right country band, I never even dawned on me that, that is what the value means, my question however is how do I know what my country band is. I have googled it a little bit but cant seem to find anything. (canada). Also I had noticed that my 2.4ghz country band and my 5ghz country band are different values. My 2.4 is 1-11 and my 5 is 36-165. Should they be the same perhaps, because I know that my 2.4 is visible. However there is no value of 1-11 for country band on the 5ghz values...I did enable the gaming as well. Thanks again for all your help!!!

The software is clever enough to find country band automatically now so prob right in both bands for Canada. 1-11 is correct as you can see here. Your 5ghz band is also correct (same as USA 36-165). Are 2.4/5ghz bands set the same (1-11 + 36-165) in router?

Can you give make/model of wireless card
Exact serial/model of Packard

If you have a pre-'n' draft card it prob won't work @ wireless 'n' @300 dual band

If you have linksys card, you need the wmp600series.
The 300series is draft pre-'n' so you're stuffed - chip can't cope!

Sorry for the delay in getting back on here. Still have not been able to get the 5ghz to work. tried setting the channels manually and still nothing. The HP is hpe-341f and the wireless card the only info I know how to find is through the device manager and it says 802.11n wireless LAN card. If there is another way to get more exact infor let me know and I will definitely look it up. Thanmk you again!!!!!

I can only see it mention 'n' - see if there is a Wireless driver update on the HP website for your card. You would have to register first probably with all your details that came in the box with 'puta.

There might be a 64bit problem, as in no finished driver (they craftily don't tell you about) or the card is incompatible with dual band/64bit due to onboard chip limitations.

Why don't u ask H.P. for some free advice - you must be under warranty etc

Check if there is a 'firmware' update for your linksys too, on Cisco site. Again you need to register with linksys/cisco to get hold of that sort of stuff usually.

If the statement above is true then there is no way you could be kicked off your own network. You should be having no problems using the 2.4Ghz band in this case because it's impossible to have a channel crosover problem if there are no neighbors in range.

In fact the 5Ghz band is really meant to be used if all the 2.4Ghz channels are being used in your area and you have no other means for a good connection. In fact the 2.4Ghz band usually works better than the 5Ghz band.

So something else is kicking you offline but it has nothing to do with using the 2.4Ghz band. You definately need to update your firmware if you havn't already.

Those are just different channels of the two different bands, they are not intended to match up.
