Can't connect to Win 7 shared from XP Hi all, I'm having a hell of a time trying to connect to my shared folders on my Win 7 RC machine from my XP machine. I have my shared folder permissions set to 'full control' for 'everyone'.
On my XP machine I click to open my win 7 machine from the workgroup and I get the username/password screen. The username is already filled in like this: WIN7PC\john. I type my win 7 password for john user account and I get an error that says: \\win7pc not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource ... multiple connections to a server by same user ... etc.
I am logged into my XP machine as user 'john' as well.
PS. I am able to access the win 7 share from my Mac. I am also able to access my XP shares from the Win 7 machine.
What am i missing? This worked fine with Vista shares from my XP machine.

./facepalm.
I HATE that bug. My housemate currently has it.
"\\x.x.x.x not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource"
As far as i can tell (through extensive testing) it's a fault in the registry and is based on general windows corruption.
Only way to fix it as far as i've seen is to re-install the OS. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 dual with XP SP2 ((Highly Custom)) CPU Intel Core2Duo e7300 sometimes @ 3.33Ghtz Motherboard Gigabyte G31M-S2L Memory 2gb Kingston HyperX Graphics Card nVidia 9800GT 1gb Sound Card Onboard Realtech AC97 High Definition codec Monitor(s) Displays HP P1120 21" CRT Screen Resolution 1600x1200 Keyboard POS $25 cheapo because i type too fast, wears down kb's Mouse M$ Intellipoint 1.1 5 button PSU Gigabyte bundled 550w Case Gigabyte Generic Cooling stock Hard Drives WD 250gb caviar

AH REALLY??!!! Just when I thought I had my system setup perfectly. I even cleaned my media center guide listing to display only the channels I pay for etc. Is there any way to back or export my settings so that I can reinstall everything and then just import those media center settings back? | My System Specs

Possibly =/ try the user state migration tool if it exists in Windows 7 - i think Windows 7 uses something else.;

What am i missing? This worked fine with Vista shares from my XP machine. Try this:
On Win 7 machine, start menu, then in search box type services.msc, hit enter.
Manually shut down the Server service. Wait a little, at least 30 seconds or so whatever, then restart it.
Now try to log back in from XP.
-If that doesn't work, make a brand new test account on XP with a different user name and then try. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self built OS 7600.20510 x86 CPU P4 550 3.4 GHz HT running at 3.5 GHz Motherboard MSI PM8M3-V (MS-7211 v1.x) Micro-ATX mainboard Memory OCZ 2 GB(2x1GB) DDR400mHz running @ 414 mHz Graphics Card HIS Radeon HD 3850 IceQ 3 Turbo HDMI Dual DL-DVI AGP Sound Card MOTU Traveler firewire studio interface 192 kHz 24 bit Monitor(s) Displays 22" widescreen Acer X223W LCD, 17" Compaq P75 CRT Screen Resolution 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 Keyboard Logitch Classical Keyboard 200 Mouse Logitech Mediaplay cordless PSU 350W generic Case Cybertronpc, it glows blue Cooling stock cpu fan, Ice-Q 3 gpu and system, many case fans Hard Drives SATA I x2 WD, 400 GB and 120 GB, SATA 2 WD Caviar Black 1 TB Internet Speed 1792/448 kbits/sec Other Info SATA II PCI fake RAID adapter, 1 GB Readyboost, original ATI Remote Wonder (even works with WMC perfectly), Logitech Rumblepad 2 game controller x2 |

thanks torrentg. Shutting down and restarting the server service did not work but creating a new user account and logging in under it did work.
When I clicked to open the win7pc from the workgroup screen, the login window username appeared as 'john' and not 'win7pc\john' like it appears when trying to connect from my regular xp user account.
Any ideas on a permanent fix so I can access the shares from my regular account?
Thanks again! | My System Specs

If your user account on the Windows 7 machine is John
And the user account on your XP machine is John
Then they should be automatically logging onto each other as long as the password is the same for both accounts. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 dual with XP SP2 ((Highly Custom)) CPU Intel Core2Duo e7300 sometimes @ 3.33Ghtz Motherboard Gigabyte G31M-S2L Memory 2gb Kingston HyperX Graphics Card nVidia 9800GT 1gb Sound Card Onboard Realtech AC97 High Definition codec Monitor(s) Displays HP P1120 21" CRT Screen Resolution 1600x1200 Keyboard POS $25 cheapo because i type too fast, wears down kb's Mouse M$ Intellipoint 1.1 5 button PSU Gigabyte bundled 550w Case Gigabyte Generic Cooling stock Hard Drives WD 250gb caviar

So ya, hekg, set the passwords identical on each machine. Reboot each machine. Then see if it works. Most likely it should, without even asking anything. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number self built OS 7600.20510 x86 CPU P4 550 3.4 GHz HT running at 3.5 GHz Motherboard MSI PM8M3-V (MS-7211 v1.x) Micro-ATX mainboard Memory OCZ 2 GB(2x1GB) DDR400mHz running @ 414 mHz Graphics Card HIS Radeon HD 3850 IceQ 3 Turbo HDMI Dual DL-DVI AGP Sound Card MOTU Traveler firewire studio interface 192 kHz 24 bit Monitor(s) Displays 22" widescreen Acer X223W LCD, 17" Compaq P75 CRT Screen Resolution 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 Keyboard Logitch Classical Keyboard 200 Mouse Logitech Mediaplay cordless PSU 350W generic Case Cybertronpc, it glows blue Cooling stock cpu fan, Ice-Q 3 gpu and system, many case fans Hard Drives SATA I x2 WD, 400 GB and 120 GB, SATA 2 WD Caviar Black 1 TB Internet Speed 1792/448 kbits/sec Other Info SATA II PCI fake RAID adapter, 1 GB Readyboost, original ATI Remote Wonder (even works with WMC perfectly), Logitech Rumblepad 2 game controller x2 |

That did it!
I actually had already tried to make the password the same on both machines but it did not work so I changed them back .. the problem was that I did not restart both machines . Thanks guys!
While I have your attention, why is my plasma not waking up after turning it off and then back on or after changing TV inputs? The only way is to put the pc to sleep then wake it up BUT then my audio does not work so I have to close the media center app and re-open it . | My System Specs

no problemo.
Modern video devices usually are required to be turned on while plugging and unplugging.
Also try disabling sleep mode in the power saving options, sleep mode has never really worked properly in windows accross the board. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 dual with XP SP2 ((Highly Custom)) CPU Intel Core2Duo e7300 sometimes @ 3.33Ghtz Motherboard Gigabyte G31M-S2L Memory 2gb Kingston HyperX Graphics Card nVidia 9800GT 1gb Sound Card Onboard Realtech AC97 High Definition codec Monitor(s) Displays HP P1120 21" CRT Screen Resolution 1600x1200 Keyboard POS $25 cheapo because i type too fast, wears down kb's Mouse M$ Intellipoint 1.1 5 button PSU Gigabyte bundled 550w Case Gigabyte Generic Cooling stock Hard Drives WD 250gb caviar
