Can't install XP shared printer with remote Win 7 64 Box

I am running a home network, cable modem to wireless router. I have an HP 3015 All-in-One installed on the XP(32) machine via a USB cable. Both the XP and Win7-64 are connected via ethernet cables. I had to change some settings in Network and Sharing Center" see post #38 in thread:

Can't see XP Machine in Windows 7

After getting the Win 7 box to see the printer on the XP box I attempted to install the printer. The wizard could not find a driver. I went to HP and they show a driver for Win 64 Bit OSs, so I downloaded and extracted same. When I try to install printer manually, it looks for an ".INF" file. I direct the search to the folder containing the extracted file and it does not find. I tried to install the driver from the "Setup" app in the extracted file and that did not work.

A year or so ago I tried the same installation of the HP3015 AIO installed via USB on the XP box, on a Vista 64 box. At that time internet research indicated that HP had discontinued development of 64 Bit drivers for the printer. So I gave up.

Now I find generic 64 bit drivers on the HP website, I just cannot get them to install.

The Windows 7 update service fails to find any appropriate drivers. As the printer is working fine, and the XP box to which it is attached is the puter my wife uses, I am reluctant to try and reconfigure the whole network. Anything I need to print, I can save as a shared doc and print from the XP machine, but that is a PITA.

    What am I missing?

Have you tried using the Windows XP compatibility mode to install the driver?

There's normally NO problem in getting an XP system to share a printer attached to a W x-64 system -- I.ve posted on how to do this ZILLIONS of times before but for those of you who missed it please look at my post - jimbo45 Nr 3 in this thread

Thank you soooo much for your tutorial. It is not entirely intuitive, but it is easy. Thanks again!
