Windows 7 - Problems connecting to internet with programs other than web browsers

Hi All,

I apologize if that subject line is slightly confusing. I will do my best to lay out my situation. I just recently did a clean install, upgrading 32bit Vista to 64bit Windows 7. I am currently using Firefox to surf the web, and it works fine for the most part. At some odd instances certain sites won't work all the sudden, such as espn.com.

My main problem however, comes when I try to use such programs as XBMC and TVRename. With both of these programs I get errors "unable to connect to remote server" I've done a fair bit of googling but can't seem to find a solution to get these working again.

I went ahead and made sure these each were allowed through the firewall. I have even tried disabling the firewall for a short period to see if that would fix the problem but it did not.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would so greatly appreciate it.

Please let me know if I can provide anymore pertinent information.

When upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 sometimes winsock needs to be reset in order for the internet to work correctly. I've seen this same complaint a few times now after an upgrade. The fix below usually works to fix this problem.

1. Click start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then press Continue.


2. Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note If the command is typed incorrectly, you will receive an error message. Type the command again. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt. Then, go to step 3.


3. Type exit, and then press ENTER. You should be prompted to reboot, if not you should reboot and test.

Thank you for responding to my post.

I followed your directions and reset my computer. I've had a few developments since I posted.

Those 2 programs were not working because the site they were trying to communicate with was actually down. They are now working today as the site is back up.

I am still having issues with certain sites not working though. All day today espn.com and cnnsi.com will not connect. Yet I have no problem accessing them on my macbook. Anyone have any clue why just certain websites wouldn't be working in windows 7?

This may have to do with the security settings in IE, you can try to relax them or set it back to defaults. If you can post those sites here I can try them and see if they work or not.

I've done some trial and error and it appears that I have no problem accessing sites when I'm running in safe mode with networking. Then all the sudden once I startup normally the problem comes back. I uninstalled my anti-virus to make sure that wasn't interfering. Any idea what might be at the heart of this?

I think it was something screwy with Firefox actually, as soon as I uninstalled it I was able to view all my sites again. It seems so strange that it would cripple my web browsing on all the browsers. But, at least it seems to be resolved now!

Well, so much for that. All the sudden, the sites aren't working again, this is so frustrating!
