Cable connection but no internet

My laptop's plugged to the system but it says constantly no internet,reset the router...done that over and over.

When I try plugging another laptop to the system it's fully functional,intenet access as usual.

so..any ideas as to what should do?

First question here would be for a hardwired by ethernet or Lan adapter or usb? as to how you are connected to the router and over to the modem? For some ISPs you would need to power down everything and unplug the ethernet cable if used from the modem and recycle that by turning off and unplugging the ac adapter.

Without anything else running you then replug the modem and allow that to re-establish itself with the ISP to refresh it's own IP address. Then you would replug the router in and turn that back on once the ethernet cable was plugged back into the modem first if one is present.

The recycled router then establishes a fresh private IP address where you can then power up the laptop and wait to see if the options screen for selecting Home, Workplace, or Public appears where you select the Home option. Once the connection is established the Network & Sharing "Map" option will show a working connection there.

Note this would offset the other laptop however where the private IP would later have to be refreshed likely by opening up a command prompt and entering the "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew" commands.

If the laptop is plugged in by way of usb and the other laptop runs a 32bit Windows there you may need to locate 64bit drivers for the particular router since that will be seen as a network adapter in the device manager. Depending on make and model you may have to use XP Pro 64 drivers if nothing newer is found at the manufacturer's support site.

In order to get online here to run the 64bit 7 the ISP had to be changed as well as replacing the cable modem the new ISP provided! I know how that one goes. If the Lan port or a nic card is used you should see it working after a few tries however while the ISP may likely have a FAQ page for this to look over as well.
