broadband advice needed

Hi guys.
I am a bit in doubt with my internet connection and speed.
Last year I was a BT broadband customer. Speed was not brilliant but internet was working. Average speed with BT was about 1.5 mb download and about 0.3 mb upload.
Now I swap my services to Virgin as it was cheaper. they check my line and said that I would have about 2-2.5 mb here. They send their router D-Link DSL-2640R.
Now speed probably is like in "Ice Age" average 0.8mb down and about 0.2mb up.
I check speed using - The Global Broadband Speed Test
So question.... Is it something on my end or I have to be angry on Virgin?

What speed do you get from the master phone socket? Do you have inline filters correctly connected on all phone outlets? How long have you been with Virgin? Remember that it may take a while for you to achieve your maximum speed for your line. Also, when they say about it is another way of saying upto. Finally, depending on your useage some ISP's throttle your connection after a certain traffic threshold is reached (they don't tend to publish this).

HI. thanks for quick reply.
I am not sure how to check speed in master phone socket but router is connected to main socket which got BT i-plate. everything is connected using cables. I switch my service to Virgin 2/09/2010. I understand that about it means up to but I would never believe 2meg lost in speed. Then its easier to say no speed at all. And no any other phones or any other equipment connected, just router and computer.

LOTS of local things can affect your speed. coaxial lines, phone lines, and cat5 lines can all be affected drastically by the placement of electrical sockets. if you have a large group of sockets near your gateway, you may want to get it a little more distant from there if you can. you can try to anchor the cables to the wall, floor, or ceiling so they avoid electric sockets between the trip to your primary phone line/cable line, if that doesn't help you then definitely have a talk with your isp about it and possibly consider switching to another.
