1-get a crossover cable (or null modem cable) connect laptop to desktop
2-create destination folders.
3-share folders with laptop and desktop
4-mount share on laptop
5-drag files from laptop to desktop
6-done

let us know if you need further assistance

Regular lan cable will not work between two computers. It needs to be a crossover lan cable.

it's fairly simple to confirm :
hold both cable ends next to each other
if the color sequence of the 8 stranded wire in the plugs is identical, it's a 1:1 cable
if not, it's a crossover

its a crossover i believe the combination are like these

first end
orange,blue green, brown

other end
green, blue, orange, brown

so green/orange are cross over but blue/brown are identical

If at least one of the PCs has a gigabyte NIC it will auto sense and you can use a normal patch cable. When you say orange, blue green, brown are you talking pairs of wires? On a normal cable one pair is split, the pins used are 1,2,3, and 6. 1 & 2 being one pair and 3 & 6 being the other. So on a crossover 1 & 2 on one end go to 3 & 6 on the other end, and vice versa.
Anyway, aside from linking PC to PC with a cable I believe you will have to setup an "ad hoc" connection. You will have to setup static IP addresses on each PC for them to talk to each other. Do you have a router by any chance? Or maybe borrow one for a short while. It would make things a lot easier.
