    is there a good but cheap wireless router for college dorms that has good security?

    I think most of the SOHO routers are pretty much the same. If it's wireless, set it up with WPA2 if possible and use MAC address filtering and you should be all set.

    they "dont allow" routers in the dorms but my RA said its ok as long as its password protected

    When I was on campus, Internet was provided through a network. So you couldn't connected a router to an already created network.

    When I lived on campus but in the apartments, cable and Internet you had to get yourself through a cable provider. In which case you could buy any router.
