windows 7 not picking up home network

I got a new computer last week that is using windows 7 home edition. I had to get a new usb adapter to get it online. The network adapter is picking up my home network using it's wizard but it's like windows can't see it sometimes. I've been losing internet connection at least once a day, today it's been all day long. When I use the "get online" option it will not pick up my home network 95% of the time even though my network adapter says that it's connected.

A couple of things I noticed was that the network adapter somehow created another network called NG Profile that is actually the exact same as my home network. Windows will pick that up but not connect to it.

Sometimes Windows will say that I'm connected to my network but there is no network access.

I'm using a Netgear WG111v3 wireless G usb adapter.

Any advice would be a great help....Geek Squad could not figure it out over the phone and I don't want to have to have someone come out and fix this.

A week ago I googled the problem and someone on here had suggested going into the Network and Sharing center and getting rid of the NGprofile then pulling out the usb adapter and put it back in so that it picks up the real home network and that worked fine up till now. And I've lost internet connection twice while typing this.

It could be a few things

wifi driver

check device manager so see it it is there and working

Please go to start>search>type device manager.
Are there any "unknown devices" with yellow triangles on them?
Is you driver there , listed, and working?

If y our driver is missing, or there is a yellow triangle on it, you will need to update it.


Homegroup-- Homegroup uses IPvv6 and sometimes on some systems there are connectivity issues. You can check that by creating a new network connection using workgroup (uses IPv4), if the problem is fixed you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup

For this particular driver to work correctly you need to use the built in drivers that Windows 7 has for it. This Netgear forum link explains how to fix the problem with a few solutions that seem to be working.

Thanks everyone. I tried everything suggested and I'm still losing my internet connection. I now think it might be because of the Network adapter. I've been watching the wizard and I've seen it lose the network connection. Reinstalling the drivers and another version didn't help.

I guess I'm off to Best Buy tomorrow!

Sorry that the link I posted didn't help you out. The Netgear WG111 v2 adaptors have even bigger problems with Windows 7 than your version 3 which at least has a chance of working correctly.

I was hoping the netgear forum might get you going, there were a few very specific instuctions there that looked promising.

If you have a wireless N router I can recommend the Dlink DWA-140 wireless N USB wireless adaptor which works extremely well for me. But the drivers on the CD and the Dlink wireless manager only caused problems for me.

What worked was to let Windows 7 install the drivers after pulgging in the adaptor and I used the Win 7 wireless set up wizard instead of the manufacture's wireless connection software which only seemed to cause problems.
