have a look at this site

if the dns client service cache on your pc receives a negative response, it caches it for a set time to avoid overloading the dns servers with further checks, but can produce errors. the referenced site shows how to fix this.

as noted, a firewall or other security software may also introduce delays, causing errors.

do you have an account with opendns? if so there are various dns configuration options that can bar or block certain classes of site via this dns service.

I run MSE and the firewall on my 2wire gateway. I've shut off Windows Firewall entirely.

Why not just go into the routers settings and change over to Googles DNS server.
    Google Public DNS

You won't need any special program to jump around to differnet DNS servers on a normal network.

It's best to type in the DNS manually into your routers DNS settings, save the settings and also create a .gws file to save those settings in case you need them later. Most routers have a method to create a .gws file so you can just use it next time the router needs to be reset.

Try NameBench to find the best DNS servers for your location. OpenDNS / Google aren't necessarily the best choice for everyone.

I've tried namebench and it failed to find the best DNS for me. It finds the fastest ones but that doesn't mean it's the best one to be using.
