Remote desktop keeps displaying the password or username is incorrect.

I have two computers (laptop and desktop) both with windows 7 ultimate 64bit and I always get "the password or username is incorrect" error when remoting in to my laptop from my desktop, but not to my desktop from my laptop. I have "allowed connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop" under remote settings on both computers. Set up Remote Desktop users allowing "everyone", and checked all firewall setting with AVG and Windows firewall to make sure port 3389 it allowed, as well as disabling the firewalls altogether. But I still get the same error and yes I am absolutely certain the log on info is correct.

Tried that, and I still got the same error. I forgot to mention that I upgraded my laptop from windows 7 home premium to ultimate with a windows 7 anytime upgrade.

Do both laptop and desktop machines have the same user name and password set?

as a quick test have you tried temporarily turning Windows Firewall/AVG off completely? (obviously this is not a long term thing but this would then defiantly rule out AVG/Firewall conflicts regardless of allowing ports through).

When i first set my home network up i had an issue with .Net Framework versions, windows updates should find and install any updates for this if needed.

Hope some of this can be of help?

I had a simmilar problem with windows 7 and logon to windows server 2003, gave me a msg that username and pass was wrong, even they weren't. It turned out to be the server time and date that was wrong, as soon as that was corrected it all worked.

hope this might help some

Regard Terroch.

Try TeamViewer 6, very easy to install and use.

Not sure if you've managed to resolve this or not, but I had a similar problem which is now resolved. Here is my scenario: - the username on Windows 7 target is changed (allegedly - and you know why I say allegedly later) by choosing "change your account name" through clicking on user picture in start menu or "user accounts" in control panel. - you try logging in to Windows 7 remotely (from server 2k3 in my case) using the new uname/password and it fails: incorrect uname/passw. - another pc in the network (xp in my case) is able to login using the new uname. If you're in similar situation, then the reason is that changing the username as said above didn't actually change the username and seems to only set a full name for the same username. to change the actual username, you need to run "netplwiz " (start menu, then just type netplwiz and enter) which shows a different looking "user accounts" window similar to "control userpasswords2" in older versions of windows. You need to have all "user account" windows closed before running this. Then select your current username, then click on properties and change the "User Name" to the new value. Notice the full name being reported as what you were expecting to be the new username.
