Windows 7: Newly downloaded files aren't shared

Newly downloaded files aren't shared

This one's got me stumped.. I like to have my Firefox downloads folder on my Windows 7 PC shared to my other PC, which is running XP. I have the folder shared to "myusername; Homegroup; Everyone". I can't seem to figure out why new files that show up in this folder are still not visible to the XP box, and I have to manually share each file in this folder. The icons for new files all have the little padlock overlay.

Thanks for any insight!

Ok, I tried setting "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" to "Enabled" within the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), but it didn't fix it. I don't have the same problem when I download a given file with IE, so it seems to be specific to Firefox. I guess I'll try posting at a Firefox forum, but I'll keep checking back here in case someone can point me in the right direction!

Do you have the folder set to "Include inheritable permissions..." under advanced? This should automatically replace and update permissions on everything you put in there. I don't have any trouble with XP machines and I have this set on all my shares.

Also, permissions sometimes just break. It's happened with all versions of Windows and Win Server that I can remember. Just take ownership of the share and remove all the permissions on it, close the Window, then go back in and readd everything.

Yes, the checkbox for "Include inheritable permissions" is checked. That's why this has me so confused, I can't decide whether this is a Windows problem or a Firefox problem, as files downloaded with IE do indeed inherit the proper permissions and are visible to other PCs, just not those downloaded with Firefox.

It should be working with no effort. Are you seeing the permissions for new files reflected on the Windows 7 box or are they not inheriting at all? I think it's a Windows problem. Firefox should have zero control over the permissions on anything. Try making a new share to replace the current one and see if it behaves any differently. Not sure that "reinstall Windows" or "stop using Firefox" isn't the best answer to this problem. If it happens on a brand new share, I would say somethings wrong with the OS, unless someone else has any better ideas.

Actually, I'm seeing a lot of oddball permission problems reported with Windows 7 all over the place after googling it. There don't seem to be many answers to the problems either.

Have you tried running Firefox in any type of compatibility mode or as Administrator or anything. i wonder if that would help.

I'm sorry but everything is working 100% fine on my systems so I can't recreate. Are you running 32 or 64? Highly doubtful it would make a difference, but worth looking into. I have 64 bit on my desktop, 32 bit on my laptop and Windows XP 32bit on another box and everything is working fine on all 3.

Aaah, i think I found it. On Vista, there was an issue reported just like this and it's caused by Firefox taking the permissions from its temp download folder and using those on your downloaded files. Windows should be propagating the permissions down from your share but its not, it's allowing the permissions to be "not inherited" on those files you downloaded.

The fix was to set the permissions on your temp download folder and the problem should go away. Pain in the ass and I don't understand why mine is working correctly without permissions set on the temp folder, but it's not affecting me on 3 different boxes. I don't use the Firefox built in download manager though. I use either Leechget or DownthemAll, depending on my mood.

Hmm, I tried what you suggested and even though it didn't make an immediate difference, it seems to have worked after letting it be for a while. Thanks for the help!

It's just weird that Mozilla doesn't have a post on this on their support site. Neither does Microsoft. Maybe it's too rare for either to take ownership of the problem Even more strange that Firefox is opensource, and this hasn't been fixed or coded around by now. Very weird.

There may be something in the Group Policy Editor i'll try and have a look but if someone else could as well that'd be cool. It could just be something relating to downloaded file/location but i'll have a look see
