dns: other computers in LAN unresolvable

    Hi!

I we have a mixed home network with Windows and Linux computers. The Windowses (my sis' Vista and also a windows 7 installation) have a problem pinging other computers on the lan. By IP all works fine, but the DNS resolution doesn't work.

    - "nslookup kiwi" works (kiwi is a Linux box)
    - "ping kiwi" does not work
    - linux pc's can ping anything they want

I run my own dhcp/dns server, of which I can see the logs. When running ping on a Windows box, I notice it doesn't actually interrogate my DNS server!

This is the output of ipconfig on a Windows 7 box:

Now if someone could tell me why Windows doesn't just do a DNS query and how I make it do that...

Are you using homegroup, or workgroup on the win 7 box?

    Hi,

the 7 box is ultimate x64. The Vista is a 32-bit Home Premium. They exhibit the same behaviour. Also, they can ping each other and a Linux box that has Samba installed - their adresses are resolved by netbios or wins probably. Never changed much to the default settings.
