How can I get VPN working between my laptop and desktop?

I want to be able to print things on my desktop's printer while at school. It would also be nice to be able to access my files.

My LAN is on a Linksys WRT54GL. I know my router's IP address. I just can't get the conventional tutorials to work for me.

I have been using ShrewSoft's VPN Client. So far it has been solid and you can read about my experience here as it may help you.
