Mapping Drives in Windows 7

First off, let me tell you thank you for taking time to read my post. I am fairly frustrated at my issue and I am hoping someone here will have an idea as to what may be going on.

Here are specs:
Laptop: HP Pavilion dv6 that runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Desktop: Dell Windows XP Home SP 3 32-bit
Router: Belkin Wireless N+

When I purchased my laptop last Christmas and set up my home network for the first time, I had some issues mapping folders from my desktop to the laptop. I was finally able to get it work. iI was never able to map folders from the laptop to the desktop, but since that was not very important, I didn't sweat it.

A couple of months ago, my router stopped working and was replaced by Belkin with the same model. Since then I have been trying to map some folders on my desktop to the laptop, without any success.

I have verified that file sharing is enabled on Windows XP and that the folders that I want to share also are enabled to be shared out. I read somewhere online that the user account and password needed to be the same on both machines, so I made sure that was the case. I will state that I only have one user account on the desktop, while there are two on the laptop. I have made sure that the workgroup for both computers is the same. I have gone through advanced network settings on the Windows 7 machine to make sure that file sharing was enabled on it. I have turned off Windows firewall on both machines as well as the firewall on the router. If I ping the desktop (XP machine) from the Windows 7 laptop, it either sees it without any problem or it drops a packet. No luck at all pinging the laptop from the desktop.

Here is what will happen. I go to my computer, then select to map network drive. When I do this, it will act like it is searching the network. About 60% of the time, the only thing it finds is my wife's user account on the laptop. Roughly 40% of the time it will find my desktop PC, sometimes even letting me click the arrow to pull down the different folders I want to map to. However, when I get this far and attempt to map to a folder, the system locks up.

Any ideas? I'll try anything at this point. If there is more info that is needed, just let me know and I'll provide it.

You shouldn't even need to map those drives although the permissions settings may need some adjustments. Sometimes you need to add "Everyone" to the "shared with" list.

You also need to make sure you enabled file sharing in both of the advanced network settings windows "there are two of these windows" one for Home-Work network and the other one is for public file sharing. You need to make sure that file sharing is enabled on both of those windows.
