Windows 7: Having trouble networking Windows 7 and Vista Ultimate.

Hi !
I have an external Toshiba cable modem -USB - attached to my computer for Internet access and I am using the Windows 7 Ultimate OS. I then have a Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine connected to a Wired Router. The Vista Machine can access the Windows 7 machine through this network but not the internet. In the Windows 7 Network dialog box it shows the External modem as a Home Network but it shows the Vista machine's ethernet card as a Public Network and it will not let me change this setting at all. I would appreciate any help with this Please !!! I hope everyone is having a great day or night !!!

Is your Windows 7 64bit as well? If it isn't, that may be the case. Have you tried changing the Vista's Network to a Home Network in "Network and Sharing Center"?

Your Kitty is one cool cat !!! The Windows 7 is 32 bit and the Vista Ultimate is 64 bit ! I'll give it try in just a little while - Thanks So Much for the Help !!!

There is only two choices on the Vista machine - Public and Private and it's set to Private. On the Windows 7 Machine it won't let me change it from Public. There aren't any Options to change?!!! Thanks for the Help !

When you say there are no options on Windows 7, do you go to:
Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center

It should tell you in the center under Active Networks, there should be a blue hyperlink that allows you change your profile (home, private, public).

Sorry, that is the only way to change it other then using administrative tools.


Network problems always are the hardest to figure out due to the lack of errors and the 500 different things that could be wrong.

Ill try to help you better tomorrow as I am going to be gone all day today, if you were unable to change it using the network center.

If the modem is plugged directly into your Windows 7 PC, the other PC wont see it. You could maybe try enabling 'Internet Connection Sharing' on both PC's, but chances are you will have to forfit the file-sharing side of it due to the IP's that will be automatically assigned via 'ICS'.

Can your modem be plugged straight into the router instead? If not, you may require a router that will work with your net connection type (The router needs a modem input) to enable full internet and networking at the same time.

Thank You So Very Much for the help !!! There is no blue hyper link to click on in the network sharing window. I have one for the modem that can be changed but not with the router connection. It's black and not a hyper link. How would you use the administrative tools to change it? I really appreciate all of your time and help Avien . I don't believe my modem can be plugged into the router but perhaps! I'll experiment later on today or first thing tomorrow. I have a really bad case of poisin ivy and I'm not doing much today other than lounging around trying not to spread it everywhere !
