Wireless keeps losing access to the internet

Hi Guys. I've already searched around trying to find a solution to my problem, but couldn't seem to, so I decided to sign up and ask on here, hoping you could help.

I'm using an ASUS Pro31F laptop with Windows 7 Professional 32it.

We recently moved house and got the internet set up. For everyone else in the house the wireless works fine. However for me and my laptop, it is constantly disconnecting and will say "limited access" with a yellow exclamation point over the wireless icon in the system tray. So in other words, it appears as if it has a connection, yet my internet will stop working. I have to disconnect from that same icon and reconnect which usually fixes the problem. But it's so annoying I'm finding myself often having to do it at least every 5 minutes while I'm surfing the net.

Now other members of my family with laptops have mentioned to me occassionally it will disconnect for them, yet rarely - more so nowhere near as much as me. The main difference between my computer and everyone else's is that I'm the only one using Windows 7 while the rest of them all have XP. I've even tried going to other ends of the house where they use it but have the same problem, leading me to believe it is a problem with my computer and not the wireless or router itself. I'm also thinking it is most likely an issue to do with windows 7 as I searched the net and found many people with similar issues. I never had a problem with the wireless on the same laptop at my old house however.

It appears to happen intermittently, however one thing I have noticed that it will usually increase the chance of happening if I am performing a lot of activity on the net. For e.g. if I am looking at wikipedia and open several tabs from links within that page in a short period of time, it will usually not like that, and disconnect again. Same as if I am multi-tasking switching between a few tabs and loading a few pages at once. Not sure if that would help with diagnosing the issue.

I also already tried the following as suggested in another post to no avail:

In the “Local & Wireless Network Connection” you need to un-tick the following items
“Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)”
“Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver”
“Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder”
Click OK after un-ticking the above for the changes to apply

At the top of display the type of Lan or Wireless card will be displayed
Click Configure – Click Advanced Tab
Click Connection Type - Change to “Auto- Negotiation”
Click Power Management Tab
Un-Tick if selected "Allow Computer to turn this device off to save power”

Other setting to check
Right click on the wireless Icon in the task bar – Click “Open the Network and Sharing Center”
Click “Change Adapter Setting” left side of page
Right click on “Wireless Network Connection” – Click Status – Click “Wireless Properties Button”
Tick “Connect Automatically when this network is in range
Tick “ Connect even if the network is not broadcasting it name (SSID)

Thanks Chev65. However I can connect to the router, it's just it intermittently loses internet access, saying limited access. I'm actually writing this response from my laptop now.

I tried changing my settings from my computer to WAP2-Personal and AES encryption (it was originally WAP-Personal and TKIP), yet it says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network". I had to change it back, as they were the only settings that did not get this message, which allowed me to connect.

I will however try and see if I can update the firmware on the router and see if that fixes the issue, or see if I can change the settings from there. I'll let you know how it goes.

I had a similar issue on my laptop when running Vista, before the upgrade to 7.
What I ended up doing was manually setting the DNS server in the network adapter properties.
As the primary DNS, I had the routers IP.
Secondary was the ISP.
Still in the properties page, if you click Advance>DNS tab, I also added the ISP's secondary DNS.
Didnt have any disconnection problems since.

After loading Win7, the adapters are using IPv6 with everything set by DHCP, any there hasnt been any disconnection errors.

However, we did get a new landline phone which caused interference on the line.
A splitter install, fixed this. However this might not be the best option for you, but replacing the filter does essentially the same thing.

Assuming its a pcmcia card, yes try that too.
Im assuming its built-in wifi.

Did you ever fix this problem? I am having the SAME exact situation, in fact, I just copied and pasted your reply to another forum because our problems are so identical. Help!!!!

Check your wifi adapter in dev. manager or power settings and make sure it hasn't defaulted to power saving mode. Might also be set as "Allow computer to turn off device to save power"
