Windows 7: Dual Wan / Dual ISP Windows 7 x64

Dual Wan / Dual ISP Windows 7 x64

I had made a dual ISP configuration on my windows 7 x64. I would like to share it here with this amazing forum.

I have two ISP's with same bandwidth, one is over wireless and the second over wire. I had configured a static IP address for both of them with same metric and WoW I got the whole bandwidth of both.

How to make your metric equal?
here is the trick. First configure the first ISP with GW metric 25 and the interface metric 1 and the second ISP with GW 24 and the interface metric with 2.

it should be 26 when you run the command in "route print"

I hope this will help some people over the world.

thats quite an elegant solution. I was also going deeper into the windows routing table but it did not strike me that setting equal metric for both interfaces would allow for a sort of load balanced gateway selection. Quite awesome.

I also have the same config, one wired and one wireless connection, each to seperate ISPs. One question though, how did you configure the metric for gateway and interface separately? Does it have to do with the 2 entries, one with "" to represent the GW and the other with "" to represent the IF?

OK got it. The Advanced TCP/IP settings in the NIC properties. Works great, thanks for this great info.
Some problems though, all multi socket apps are not able to use the combined bandwidth. uTorrent works, but FreeDownloadManager and Firefox DTA does not work. What all clients are you using to get the combined bw?

Thank you very much for this wonderful solution.

I at first tried to use static IP addresses but ran into problems with default gateway on x64-Win7. Then I switched to DHCP client and both the connections are activated.

In my case the 2 connection speeds are not the same (2mbps + 1 mbps). I would still like to get aggregated download speeds. Can you suggest which Download Manager can manage that? If nothing else if I can manage to assign the slower connection for uTorrent I would be happy. I would not have to have 2 PCs running at the same time.

Will try it on x86-Win 7 and see if it works there too. Have been searching for over a year to fix this wifi+wired interfaces connecting to 2 different ISPs.

Something strange indeed !!

Since my last post I implelented this setup on my 32 bit Win 7 and experienced a really strange but very welcome phenomenon.

I have 2 internet connections. 1 is a 512 kbps /1 mbps combo wich is on 24/7 on this particular machine. The other is 2 mbps which I use only during nights - 09.00 pm to 09.00 am. Just costs US$ 6/= per month for unlimited downloads.

I have 2 instances of Networx running to monitor the transfers on the 2 NICs. Both get maxed out at 250 KBps and 130 KBps (kilo bytes) . I have uTorrent bound to the slower connection (via net.bind_ip setting) and IDM for my http transfers. When I checked the transfers in these 2 applications is when I got a shock. IDM was downloading 2 files at aggregate value of 350 kilobytes per second ( 250 on one file and 100 on another) while uTorrent showed just 30 kilobytes download speed. So in effect IDM was connecting to the same host via 2 different NICs connecting to 2 different ISPs at 2 different speeds having entirely different IP address ranges.

I searched the net for this this kind of behavior for IDM but could not find anything. And to think I have been looking for just this solution for over a year and all th while had 2 PCs running simultaneously !!

While writing this post I noticed something even more strange. Now a single file is downloading at 300 KBps and the other at around 50. So even for a single file in multi stream more IDM is utilizing multiple NIC. I think it was money well spent !

I think I will give up the idea of running pFSense in VMPlayer to get full bandwidth usage.
