Sharing folders with Virtual Machines

Could someone explain, how Windows 7 handles folder sharing with Virtual Machines?

I have a few questions:

- when non-system partition folders are Shared, are their subfolders included automaticaly as Shared (I don't see any option to include subfolders in the shared folders Properties);
- if subfolders are not included, how to include them without changing permissions of each? Btw, whats Windows 7 ACL and how to access it?
- any other reason, shared folders content is not visible in a VM, only a shared folder list is visible?
