I believe that Avira is causing this DNS problem. The post below explains the problem with Avira.

I was able to run a scan using Avira yesterday with no problem, but could it be that since I had Avira first, then tried using OpenDNS, Avira more or less killed the OpenDNS? Can't remember what the AVS is on the HP laptop but I don't think it's Avira and I'd been so frustrated that things didn't work with the Acer, didn't bother with the HP!

Thanks for the suggestion - saved it to a jumpdrive so I'll try that as well. If nothing else, it may give me a better idea of what's wrong.

I've tried a few of the suggestions and so far nothing seems to be working. Tried using the OpenDNS on HP Pavillion and it didn't work. Also tried the DNS Jumper using multiple DNS services and each one came back "host is offline". Tried with Broadcom NetLink & wireless netork adapter.

Last night I brought my laptop home from my office (another HP Pavillion w/ XP Professional) and I'm having the same problem with it. Called RoadRunner and finally got them to agree if I'm having the problem with 3 computers, the problem is on their end and they're sending somebody tomorrow (Sunday) between 8am and 9pm.

Pasted below is the 'ipconfig /all' for my Acer Aspire. I got this while connected to McDonald's WiFi so I'm not sure if that would influence the report. If anybody has any ideas what could be wrong, please let me know

    Thanks!

If you look at the parts in RED this is what you are missing or is not configured correctly.

Edit: I see the DNS addresses in there missed them the frist time. But the DNS suffix should be blank.

Windowstar, the reason the DNS shows as mcd01541.det.wayport.net is because he is connected to micky D's wireless connection where they use a restricted DNS server. I'm also pretty sure that the Op has also tried using manual DNS entries.

The only other DNS problems I could find were in this Technet thread which showed a few fixes for the problem which usually resulted from upgrade installs, VPN software, Msoft mini port problems which can be fixed by disabling the miniport, or a few other possible problems "click the link below".

1 - I had to uninstall the VPN software and reboot the box.
2 - I had to open Device Manager, Choose View - Show Hidden Devices
3 - Delete any and all Intel networking components (actually you choose uninstall)
4 - Delete the Microsoft 6to4 Adapter (it will be remade on the reboot)
5 - Delete all the Microsoft ISATAP drivers.

chev65, understood, however I have seen DNS suffixes like "mcd01541.det.wayport.net" mess up DNS because when you type in www.google.com in your web browser, it gets resoved as "www.google.com.mcd01541.det.wayport.net" which does not exist, so IP addresses work but names never resolve correctly. This may not be the case here, but removing it would be a good test. -WS

I havn't seen one like that either to be honest although that ipconfig was from a working connection at McDonalds so I think it's just some lame restricted DNS they make you use.

I posted all the DNS fixes I found for Windows 7 from the Technet sites which showed a few ways to fix this sort of problem.
