Ok thanks for posting that link. But it said nothing relating to the question that I asked. Did you read my question?
Surprisingly, I did. One thought was to create two different wireless network profile types, one for work and one for home. Or was that not related to what you asked?
OK, I must be dense. Wouldn't be the first time.

The article that you sent me to mentions this about Profiles:'

"If you have multiple users on your computer and security is an issue, the first thing you’ll want to do is Click Profile types and adjust the settings in there."

From that I took it to mean that profiles manage how local users interact with WiFi.

How does that help me to have a different group of settings for home vs on the road?

And if it does help you to have different groups of settings, where is the option to create and save these different sets? The only two options on that screen seem to deal with whether or not a local user can share your WiFi settings.

That isn't even close to what I was asking.

    Am I missing something obvious?

    Thanks...

As for the fixed IP for home use - what I do is set up my router to always assign a specific IP to eacgh of my mobile devices (based on MAC addresses), so I can leave my device on auto but get a specific IP.
I will have to see if my router (Netgear wgr614v8) has that capability. Does that feature have a name?

It's a function of the DHCP server in the router, and should be available as address reservation or similar - unfortunately it seems that every manufacturer has it's own name for things, but, I have seen the function on all routers I've seen over recent years
Ok, will take a look for it.

That would at least solve my problem now. Having a static IP address at home makes life a LOT easier for accessing certain resources located on the laptop when I am at home.

    Thanks!

Actually my last post told you how to do this, you can list the different subnets and everything else in TCP/IP advanced properties window.

Other than that you need to adjust the wireless settings in "manage my wireless connections" at the network and sharing center.
