Solved Says connected to internet, but cant open browser

Hi all,
for the last few days i have been having the problem of not being able to connect to the internet. only my desktop is having a problem so that eliminates the router. whether through wireless or wired, it says that it is connected in the bottom right and under network. but when i open either mozilla, IE, or safari, they all say unable to connect. i tried reloading the wireless card drivers. it is a Ralink RT61. is someone could help, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

Check IE under internet connection to see if proxy or autodetect settings is checked.

can you ping any site?

Does it do this in safe mode?

thanks for the help. im not very tech-savvy so bear with me.
i dont know how to do the first. could you elaborate?
ping: it said that request timed out and it lost 100% of packets.
and no it isnt in safe mode

hmm strike that. ping is fine, except for ebay.com. that one has a 100% packets lost. i tried a few others and the had 0% packets lost

Try running this batch file which will reset winsock, reset the TCP/IP stack and release renew your IP.

Hi Chev65,

I don't mean to hijack the thread (although it seems to have come to a happy end for pdub) but I may have a similar but different problem. I haven't tried anything yet to repair it.

On my notebook, I cannot connect wirelessly to the internet, but if I plug in it works fine. If I troubleshoot the internet connection, it says the DNS server isn't responding. If I troubleshoot the wireless network adapter it says it can't find anything wrong. The notebook connected fine wirelessly at my mom's house last week so it doesn't seem to be a prob with the wireless nic. The week before I visited my mom I noticed the problem. This notebook has had this prob before and folks checked lots of potential probs (DNS - suggesting that I use a different dns host (?), iPV6, and other things I think). I think I ultimately did a complete reinstall of Win7. So..... any thoughts? Should I try the reset ip & winsock bat? Should I start a new thread?

It won't hurt anything to try the reset, though your problem may not be the same.

You can also try designating the DNS in your routers settings, I use googles DNS server there 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 .

You can also flush the DNS with this command "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes.

I tried the reset but at several pauses, said i needed to elevate. I'm logged in to my only (admin) account.
I tried the flush too. Then turned off, then on, the wireless antenna. At first I thought there was joy, but when I tried to connect "IE cannot display the web page". This is the same as before. The wireless icon says connected but no internet access. I can verify that I can see my home network so it does appear that the wireless is working, but there is a problem with IE access. I can ping the google addresses above, but can't ping www.google.com.

Thoughts? New thread?

In that case you need to type cmd then right click the small icon and choose "run as administrator" then run the commands again. Although I can't say if this will fix your particular problem. It might help if you post a screen shot of your ipconfig /all .

No luck running ip winsock reset in admin mode.

Here's a screenshot of the ipconf status.

I tried to have the nic check for newer drivers, but I'm not sure it could connect. Said it had the latest though.

Do you think this is a router problem instead of a PC problem, especially since it connected fine on my mom's router?

Other ideas?

The problem I'm seeing here is that your DNS server "RFDhome" isn't anything I have heard of before. It's not a standard DNS address. It looks like your ISP is making you use this DNS for some reason so it might be best to call them and ask what this DNS means. This looks like you are using some type of modem router combo from them or something.

You can try to change the DNS by going into your routers settings or your IPv4 properties and typing in a different DNS server address.

RFDhome is a dummy domain that I had in the router... for years. lol. dumb me. The problem is fixed now, but I don't know exactly why. This computer has worked on this router with this setup for about a year and a half now.

I took out the RFDhome, saved the router settings the exited, flushed the dns cache and reset the ip and windsock on the pc, and turned off/on the wireless antenna but there was no difference. I then powercycled the modem and router and things worked fine.

The (seemingly) exact same problem happened about 7 months ago and there was lots of hand wringing and working with folks on another online support forum and MS to no avail. I did a complete reinstall of Win 7 and things worked fine until recently - although this pc wasn't used for about 2 months until about 3 weeks ago.

Any clue what the root problem is??? I'd sure like to avoid it in the future!!

You just needed to flush out and remove that old RFDhome as your DNS server. It was obvious to me that would be a problem just by looking at your ipconfig /all. I just assumed it was something your ISP did to you but I guess not.

It looks like you might have entered that manually where your DNS server should be in your routers settings. That DNS server isn't a good one and you should try using googles DNS or anything but that one.

It shouldn't happen again but just to be sure and use a more common DNS server like Open DNS or googles DNS or anyone but that one and enter it into your router as the DNS server.

I'm curious now as to what your current DNS is? Another ipconfig /all will tell you that.

The RFDhome was in a field named 'connection-specific dns suffix' and the help notes said some isp's may require an entry. Mine didn't (I checked) so the field is now blank.

If I'd done an pconfig/all we'd probably have seen the dns servers assigned previously. Should be the same one's that show now. I think they are opendns or google or a combo but don't really recall. here is what is reported 1) 24.159.64.23 2) 24.178.162.3 and 3) 97.81.22.195. May even be charter. Do you need me to post a png with a screenshot?

I was reading one of your posts in another thread about how routers often require a firmware update for Win 7. My router is a Linksys WRT54G ver 2.0 and the firmware version is v2.04.4 (Aug 2004 ! ). I don't recall updating it when I installed Win 7 to the notebook. Do you think a firmware update would be beneficial? If so, what about going the DD-WRT route; that looks appealing to me?

You should definately go with either the tomato or the DD-WRT, the most recent one of course and make sure it's made to work with your exact version of WRT54g because there are about 12 versions of that same router and the firmware's are version number specific. You should get better performance from your WRT54G with newer firmware.

The DNS problem I can't say for sure but I think your ISP had something to do with that problem but it could also be the router's firmware acting up.
