Very odd no Connection Issue.. please help

So to make a long story short, I am using Win7 64bit. I am able to get a solid internet connection when I use an older wireless router (the connection is through the hard wired part not wireless). However, when I try to connect my cable modem straight to my computer I get the no net access issue. I would prefer not to use the wireless router, and was hoping for some insight on how to resolve this.

This wasn't an issue till about 2 weeks ago, there wasn't anything I can think of as far as me installing that would have caused this.

When run from modem to computer (sans router) the ip lists as a 169. address (I am told this is not right). I have run ipconfig and release and renew get the error that i am not connected basically so nothing happens. I have checked for the bonjour stuff and have seen nothing.

What really gets me is that everything is fine with the router connected, but without all i get is unidentified network. Can anyone toss out some ideas please, it would be much appreciated.

You need to be connected to a router to gain access to the internet.

How are you supposed to be connected to the internet without being in a network? You need a router, because the router holds the default gateway ip address and subnet mask for your network.

The role of the router is to set up routing protocols and hop to allow you to connect to the internet, without a router your internet connection will have no idea where to go.

And if you are unhappy with the current router you have. You can get a decent cheap router at Wal-Mart.

Wrong. You do not need to be on a network to connect to the internet. The firewall on the router does tend to be a lil more helpfull on keeping baddies out though.

The cable modem does the EXACT SAME THING, how do you think the router talks to the internet??? Magic????

You may just have a static ip set on your computer or you may need to call you isp and get them to reset the modem, flush the cache, and work their magic :)

Sorry it took so long to reply...... I was pretty sure I had everything caught up before I went to bed I guess I didn't... My indirect email isn't showing up anymore weird. This is going to sound like kinda a weird step but im assuming your router has the ability to clone macs?? If it does hook your computer up to it and have it pull the mac of your pc.... Maybe the isp is blocking your mac for some reason :S
