Very odd no Connection Issue.. please help

So to make a long story short, I am using Win7 64bit. I am able to get a solid internet connection when I use an older wireless router (the connection is through the hard wired part not wireless). However, when I try to connect my cable modem straight to my computer I get the no net access issue. I would prefer not to use the wireless router, and was hoping for some insight on how to resolve this.

This wasn't an issue till about 2 weeks ago, there wasn't anything I can think of as far as me installing that would have caused this.

When run from modem to computer (sans router) the ip lists as a 169. address (I am told this is not right). I have run ipconfig and release and renew get the error that i am not connected basically so nothing happens. I have checked for the bonjour stuff and have seen nothing.

What really gets me is that everything is fine with the router connected, but without all i get is unidentified network. Can anyone toss out some ideas please, it would be much appreciated.

p.s. I am no expert with this stuff, but have tried some of the listed things in this forum with no luck.

You need to be connected to a router to gain access to the internet.

How are you supposed to be connected to the internet without being in a network? You need a router, because the router holds the default gateway ip address and subnet mask for your network.

The role of the router is to set up routing protocols and hop to allow you to connect to the internet, without a router your internet connection will have no idea where to go.

And if you are unhappy with the current router you have. You can get a decent cheap router at Wal-Mart.

Any questions, private message me, hope I helped,

Firebat, I have never needed a router before. I simply would connect my cable modem straight to the back of my computer. And until 2 weeks ago that wasn't an issue. I have had the wireless router in storage, but not needed it till now. The router is the only thing allowing me to connect for some odd reason.

Wrong. You do not need to be on a network to connect to the internet. The firewall on the router does tend to be a lil more helpfull on keeping baddies out though.

The cable modem does the EXACT SAME THING, how do you think the router talks to the internet??? Magic????

    Do not listen to firebat

    Firebat,
If you have any question feel free to pm me :)
Yes you are a year almost two years younger than me but I have managed 4 + networks since I was ten :)

    Bishop0001,
Please feel free to pm me or reach me at the email listed in my profile if you have any questions.
You may just have a static ip set on your computer or you may need to call you isp and get them to reset the modem, flush the cache, and work their magic :)

mckillwashere thank you very much for the interest in my posting, I looked in your profile and was unable to find an email there perhaps I was missing it or something. And I couldn't find an option to pm, perhaps cuz I am a newbie here.

With regards to what you said at the end of the post, since I was having this issue, I had the cable company come out to me about a week ago, and they replaced the modem, thinking that could have been the issue (I was pretty sure it wasn't, but couldn't hurt). I am fairly certain that while they attempted to setup the modem they did alot of trying to fix the issue on their side. In fact while not connected to the wireless router the modem would just cycle through all of its lights over and over again, not initializing. Once I hooked it up to my wireless router bam the modem lights held solid and good connection.

I am fairly sure the issue is with my side of things, as the net does work with the router going, just no dice without.

Sorry it took so long to reply...... I was pretty sure I had everything caught up before I went to bed I guess I didn't... My indirect email isn't showing up anymore weird. This is going to sound like kinda a weird step but im assuming your router has the ability to clone macs?? If it does hook your computer up to it and have it pull the mac of your pc.... Maybe the isp is blocking your mac for some reason :S

clone macs - this sorta stuff is above my head, i have a general idea that you are referring to the mac address. I am just not sure what it is you are asking me to do specifically. I don't get the, pull the mac off your computer line, and how that would help me. Wish I had a better working knowledge of some of this stuff. But thanx for sticking with me.
