http://www.speedtest.net/result/1645272206.png

It's actually interesting how I got my internet speed up to 20 Mbps. I went with iiNet in Melbourne, who told me I had a pair gain system in my estate. They told me the best service I would ever get was a 1.5mb connection, and since I had to share the pair with another house then I could probably expect slow downs.

This was very disappointing, and when it finally got connected (took 3 weeks), I was averaging 30 - 80 Kbps - In the real world.

We all know that real world is not how Telco's look at things. They use speed test sites that are frequently hit so the data is cached and the speed test sites don't give real world results.

So, the speed test results I got were 110 - 120 kps. I never exceeded 80 kpbs in the real world. Anyway, Tel$tra said this is over the minimum required threshold and refused to take a fault report.

At 1.5 Mbps at 2.6KM to the local exchange I should have been getting better than 80KBps.

So, after a three week battle and complaints to the ombudsman I moved to a new ISP, requested that they remove any speed limiting codes from the DSLAM and give me what I was paying for - ADSL2+, uncapped.

The measured distance from exchange to me suddenly dropped from 2,800 metres to 246 metres. My speed jumped up to 2.4MBps. For the most part it is stable at around 1.9 - 2.1 MBps in the real world.

Just thought I'd share that.

Have a good Christmas.
Tanya

BTW, I got this result at around 7pm on New Year's eve on my home, residential, no frills (afaik) Cablevision service.
