Network Discovery won't stay ticked I have a Windows 7 (professional) PC and laptop (Home Premium) set on a home network and just traced a 0x80070035 error when trying to connect from the laptop to "Network Discovery" being turned off on the PC.
When I tick the box to enable it and save the changes, it doesn't take effect. As soon as I reopen Sharing Properties, it is un-ticked again.

What's up? This problem is usually caused from certain services not being enabled or set to automatic.
Please check your Services. Ensure that the required services are Started on all the computers:
Go to Start\Control Panel\ Administrative Tools\ Services.
o Computer Browser
o DHCP Client
o DNS Client
o Network Connections
o Network Location Awareness
o Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
o Server
o TCP/IP Netbios helper
o Workstation
All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.
To change the startup type, double-click on the service name and change accordingly.
This should do the trick.
Having certain types of A/V software like AVG can also cause problems like this.

What's up? Hello woodart;
According to this MS link, home networks for Windows 7 using the "Home network" location (instead of "Work network" or "Public network" locations) have the "network discovery" turned on by default. In my experience, clicking the "Network discovery" tic box has no effect since it is already on and being used by default. Choosing a network location
Hope this helps!
Cheers!

Well actually, I seem to be going backwards.
I checked services and found that "Computer Browser" was "Stopped/Manual", DHCP was "Stopped/Manual" and DNS Client was disabled. I restared all and changed them to automatic but am still getting the error. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number iBuypower OS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit CPU i7 965 Extreme @4.0GHz Motherboard Asus P6D Deluxe Memory Corsair Dominator 12GB Graphics Card EVGA 295-GTX Sound Card SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Monitor(s) Displays ViewSonic 22" LCD Screen Resolution 1680x1050 PSU Ultra 1000W Case Coolermaster HAF 932 Cooling Liquid Hard Drives (2) Hitachi 320GB in RAID-0

I'm not sure if this helps, but I am able to stream audio/video from the PC to the laptop through "Media Devices".
I get the error when I try to directly access the computer. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number iBuypower OS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit CPU i7 965 Extreme @4.0GHz Motherboard Asus P6D Deluxe Memory Corsair Dominator 12GB Graphics Card EVGA 295-GTX Sound Card SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Monitor(s) Displays ViewSonic 22" LCD Screen Resolution 1680x1050 PSU Ultra 1000W Case Coolermaster HAF 932 Cooling Liquid Hard Drives (2) Hitachi 320GB in RAID-0

Usually having those disabled will cause this problem, I'm not sure why all those services would be disabled because they are supposed to be enabled by default. Sounds like another one of those "Black Viper" performance tunes was done.
Also check both the Advanced "Public" sharing options and the Work-Home advanced sharing options and make sure network discovery is enabled there also. Try restarting the machine with the problem and try again. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built OS Windows 7 Ult, Windows 8 Pro, CPU Q9650-4.275GHz, E8600 4.5GHz, E6750-3.8GHz Motherboard Evga 780i FTW Memory G.Skill PC2 9600 1200Mhz 5 5 5 15 2T Graphics Card GTX480 Sound Card Asus Xonar D2 Monitor(s) Displays HannsG Screen Resolution 1680X1050 Keyboard Logitech G15 Mouse Logitech G9 PSU ThermalTake Toughpower 1000Watt modular Case ThermalTake XaserV Cooling Xigmatek S1283 Hard Drives GSkill Phoenix Pro 120GB SSD Internet Speed T1 |

Have you tried running sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt?
Technet has lots of posts about this problem, maybe you can find something the relates.

Still no joy. The Network discovery box now stays ticked but there is still no access from the laptop.

Ok so hold on a minute here, the box does in fact stay ticked on now so we have fixed the original problem and now you are having a file access problem correct?
These are in fact two completely different problems, the first one is solved. Having all of those services disabled will cause this problem everytime.
This is fun for me and you ain't seen nothing yet.
As for the file access problem take a look at this tutorial and follow the steps to allow access to your folders and files.
