Network Adaptor settings and normal Users

Hi All

I would like to know if someone could help me with the following issue.

Currently I am setting up a stand alone machine which has one admin account and multiple user accounts.

I want to be able to allow users to change their network adaptor settings without windows 7 prompting them for the admin password and username. I am happy for it to ask for the users credentials when they are doing the change, but currently they need the admin password which I do not want to give to them. The network Configuration Operator account type still prompts for the admin password, not the user password

Is there a way to downgrade the account required to change the network adaptor setting? The computer itself also has duel nics.

My other issue, which is somewhat unrelated is that when I apply a SSLF GPO to the laptop, it prevents the user from even getting to the credentials menu, and comes up saying an unexpected error occured.

If someone could help with my main problem though that would be appreciated.

Hi Sorry

It is Windows 7 Professional 64bit, the PC will be setup as a stand alone machine, not part of a network build or rollout.

Windows 7 Pro allows for managing users and groups. Have you considered making your "User" accounts "Super User" accounts and setting their user settings as you need? Or creating one "Super User" or "Administrator" account and giving that account the user privileges needed to manage the nic and then giving that account's password to your users?

I am happy to make them super users, and change their settings. If someone can give me some guidance in regards to this that would be great. I have been tasked with doing this but I do not have much experience in that area.

I have already created an mmc snapin for non-administrators and restricted the users from doing a fair amount on the pc already. I have not been able to find anywhere within gpedit etc where I can change the network adaptor setting.

I do not have a copy of 7 Pro and cannot guide you there. It sounds like you have made commendable progress already. It seems to me to be an easier task to setup a group with NIC permissions so you only need to configure one account, as apposed to configuring a number of user accounts individually?

When I need info like this, I rely on Google and MS sites like:

By the looks of it of course GPMC Is not part of Windows 7 Pro by default.

I am now having a look at the following software

This is an encrypted version of RunAs. Now is anyone able to tell me how the network adaptor runs? Is it a process or a service / task? I am really after the command line I will need to put in, in order to get this to run. In my situation the laptop wil be running two nics.
Any further help with this would be great, and I appreciate the help so far.

Have had a look at that, no dice doesn't work, I have set it in the main Local GPO area, and the sub Non-admin GPO and it still escalates to Admin, which I don't want

You made the changes and then did a complete POWER OFF and ON?? Just making the changes in many cases in not enough you must Power Cycle. :)

While I did not power it off I did a full restart, although I could have a go at doing a total shutdown not sure if that would change anything.

Does anyone know how Network adaptor runs? Can you run it as a task in admin mode on startup?

A full restart should be good enough, but on the small chance I would power cycle. Policies can be tricky. :mad:

Did a full shutdown, still no dice, doesn't work, prompts for Admin account does not recognise user account

It is basically the screen after this one when you want to go to properties, it will come up with UAC Escalation screen, asking for the admin password.

See the second doco. I just hunted around quickly for some pictures off the net, but the credential prompt basically just says the network adaptor instead of the console program as in that picture.
