    hahaha!!!!

i actually found the solution a week or so ago.
i changed back to xp. not one disconnection. i have been downloading, how can i say, gentlemans material via a subscription usenet at very heavy loads and fast rates and i currently have 60 hours continuous connection. and before that prob the same again. pc reboot was reason for disconnection.
so the problem is without doubt, windows 7 related. wíth that i could have 3 or 4 disconnects in one night!!!!
i have 2 drives on this pc, one with xp and one with win7. i can decide at bios which one to boot with.
i have issues with internet disconnects and i have 2 old pieces of software that will run with xp but wont run with win7.
so for now win7 gets the thumbs down and i wouldnt recommend it to anyone.
i will stay tuned in for a fix.

Seems to be an issue with that specific NIC and Windows 7. I bought a different NIC that cost me about $14 off newegg and haven't disconnected since. It wasn't listed as compatible when I bought it, but it's working so I can't complain.

I don't believe my NIC was broken unless somehow installing Win7 broke it, since it was working 100% correctly with windows XP.

Good luck to everyone else having this issue.

    This worked for me

Hi, not sure whether you have fixed the 'the default gateway not available' problem but i had this very annoying prob too, until today.

I tried all the fixes i found through google but what worked for me was:

Going to the ethernet manufacturer site to download and save the latest ethernet driver software. Mine was intel.

Using 'device manager' to uninstall the present ethernet driver.

Turn off pc, unplug internet connection then turn pc back on.

Install the saved ethernet driver software.

    Reconnect internet.

It seems to have resolved my problem. The connection was dropping literally every 5 mins and was extremely frustrating. Fingers crossed it stays fixed!

Sounds like my exact problem too. Have two modems, done it with both, so that's not it. Different router and the problem is still there so that's not it either. Pretty much leaves either the Realtek chipset or Windows itself. I have noticed that the problem occurs less (or rarely) with a driver from March 2010, while anything more recent (including the latest driver), and that problem will show up again sooner or later.

i have 2 hard drives in my pc with xp on one and win7 on the other. i dont bother booting up the iwindows 7 hd up now. since all my probs constantly disconnecting i simply boot up the xp drive and havent had 1 disconnection and that silly error the default blah blah. must be months now. not one. whereas i can go on win7 and get 3 or 4 a night. when there is a fix i might start using win 7 again but at the moment it has been a waste of 70 quid.

OH, almost forgot to mention (since it's important)....this has happened on two different motherboards as well... first an ASUS, now an MSI, so it's not specific to any brand either (they both have Realtek network chipsets though)

its funny how my set up works perfectly, and i mean perfectly. not one problem with xp.
but with win7 there are frequent default gateway errors. you would think by now a fix would have surfaced.
i can switch to either os by going to bios on boot up.
    best of luck
