    Need networking help

I have 2 home computers joined through windows 7 home network:

1 is a desktop connected to the d link draft n router via a cable. The other is a laptop with an Atheros wireless n adapter.

Both computers get good internet speeds (20-25mps desktop, 10-20 mps laptop) but the file transfer speeds over the network are usually around 450kbs, once it made it to 1.3mps. Is this a normal speed. Not sure if my settings are off.

Desktop set to auto negotiation for speed / duplex, wireless set to N (40 bgn)

Any tips to speed this up?

You should be seeing much greater speeds. My 100 megabit per second network transfers between machines at 11.5 megabytes per second.

It is probably your wireless that is not configured well in the router. Look into that. Download the owners' manual if necessary.

As a test I plugged the laptop into the router with a cable and transfered files from my pc and got about 10mbs speed instead. So it definately just transfers slow over the wireless (1.5 mbs)

The router is set to put out N only at auto 20/40 (no option for 40 only) with WPA-2 AES security mode.

The laptop doesn't let me adjust speed/ duplex. But does have a wireless mode setting offering:
    -11nbg 40mhz
-11n 2.4 gig (tried this but was no faster)
-11n 5ghz (wont work at all)

Any suggestions as to what I'm missing?
    Firmware and drivers are updated.

Good security if using a long password. :) That has overhead which should slow transfers but not by too much.

Since tests are good, like what you did already, you could try setting the wireless network adapter on the laptope to run half-duplex. Disable, then re-enable the adapter. See what happens for the heck of it and set it back to auto if not favorable.

I can't find any drivers (that work) that offer changes to duplex that could be the prob I guess. Maybe this Atheros AR5009 is just a POS lol

what kind of adapter is it? i know its an atheros chipset... but who is the hardware manufacturer?

Thing is, the atheros chipsets are one of the funky ones that dont have any perfect correctly working 100% drivers, atleast that i have yet to come across. Some i have better luck than others. The "default/generic/tulip" athrusb.sys driver doesnt funtion hardly at all for me. I think that date was 11/10/2007.

There was another athru6.sys dated either 7/5/2007. Those were about 65% working, but still had a number of connection issues and drops. Currently i am using the athrusb.sys dated 1/29/2007. Which seems to work a bit better, maybe 85%, but still has a drop here or there under load.

Tho i havent played with the wireless in a few weeks here, so i could have gotten the first two drivers that i mentioned backwards, as far as working capacity.

    Attached are the two drivers

    athru6.7-5-07.v2.0.2.12.zip
    athrusb-1-29-07.v.2.0.0.130.zip

give these a go and let me know your results.
